Sailor Returns From Mediterranean Deployment Aboard USS San Jacinto
Navy Petty Officer Randy R. Sage, son of Daryl L. and Deloris E. Morgison of Baldwin City, returned from a six month Mediterranean Adriatic and Red Sea deployment with the USS San Jacinto as part of the USS George Washington Joint Task Group. A Baldwin High School graduate of 1991, he joined the Navy in February 1993.

Drug use by youth climbs in latest survey findings
A national study reports rising illegal drug use among youths with 35 percent of eighth graders 43 percent of tenth graders and about half of twelfth graders having tried illegal drugs. Marijuana use soared, with eighth graders at 13 percent, tenth graders 25 percent, and seniors 31 percent. Inhalants remain common in early adolescence while alcohol use stayed steady. The survey covered 52,000 students in 420 schools and was funded by grants from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

ECKAN Opens Miami County Housing Venture
ECKAN begins a new housing project in Osawatomie with three 3 bedroom duplexes on 3.1 acres donated by the city. A $345,000 loan from Miami County National Bank supports the effort, the first ECKAN venture outside Franklin County. Duplexes are manufactured and under construction in Osage City, set for early January with move-ins aimed for February 1. Each unit spans about 1,160 square feet with one car garage.
