Ottawa High and OU Jazz and Band Concerts

Ottawa High School bands and Ottawa University music groups present a joint winter concert at 7 p.m. in the new school gym at 1120 Ash, free of charge. The concert features Holiday tunes from the concert band and a selection of seasonal pieces from the jazz band with soloists Misty Childers, Kevin Morton, Timothy Hopkins, Charlene Macy, and Jason Greisen. The evening also includes performances by Adelante Singers, University Choir, University Ringers, Symphonette, and Ottawa Suzuki Strings, directed by Joyce Stuermer, Thomas Gouwens, Byron Jensen, and Alice Joy Lewis. The OU Christmas Vespers is Sunday at 4 p.m. in the OU chapel, a long time tradition for faculty, students, and townspeople.

Johnson County Bank buys Overland Park Olathe branches

The bank announced Friday it acquired the Overland Park and Olathe Household Bank branches and will offer full service there Monday. JCB, tied to Peoples National Bank and Trust and Capital City Bank, has about 2.5 billion capital and aims to serve Johnson County consumers and small businesses. Executives Cheryl Mitchell, Dennis Bartkoski, Linda Kahmann join senior roles from Peoples.

Kansas Weather Outlook From Monday Through Wednesday

The forecast calls for dry conditions in Kansas from Monday with lows around 10 degrees in the northwest and near 20s in the southeast, highs in the 30s. Tuesday remains dry with lows 15 to 25 and highs in the 30s. Wednesday may bring light rain or snow in the west with dry conditions elsewhere, lows in the 20s and highs from the middle 30s in the northwest to the middle 40s in the southeast.

Clinton outlines partnership for prosperity at Americas summit

President Clinton, at a 34 nation Summit of the Americas, urged a new partnership to expand markets and democracy. He praised ballots over bullets, noted Fidel Castro as the last authoritarian leader, and said the gathering aims to a hemisphere-wide free trade framework by 2005 to create jobs and opportunity.

Coat drive aids Ottawa needy amid holiday drive

The Ottawa Downtown Business Association hosts a fourth week coat drive for the needy, accepting coats hats gloves and blankets at eight downtown businesses to be given to Hope House and ECEAN. Russ Reeves notes donations should be clean with a focus on children's items as Kim Lydick says Heavenly Scents box is full. Dale Johnson organized the effort saying the group has a stake in the community and aims to give back what it has received.

Population patterns forecast growth across Kansas counties

Population projections through 2030 show Johnson County rising from 355000 to 655000, an 85 percent gain and the state’s largest county. Sedgwick and Ford and Kearny counties also rise, while Bitter notes some counties may shrink. Education and jobs, especially for the educated young, influence migration and retention of residents.
