Former Ottawa astronaut Hawley keeps role at NASA

Former Salina resident Steve Hawley, deputy director of flight crew operations at NASA, discussed plans for shuttle missions from the ground during a visit to Salina. He noted eight missions yearly, emphasized future science missions, and addressed funding and political support under Clinton/Gore.

Plane crash at Kansas City airport kills one

A small private plane crashed just off a taxiway at Kansas City International Airport this morning. One man died at the scene and another was taken to a Liberty hospital. Identities were not disclosed.

RMEL relatives triumph in recycling art contest

Library accepts food in lieu of fines at Ottawa Public Library

The Ottawa Library will accept canned food to offset overdue fines through Christmas, with each item valued at 50 cents, aiding the East Central Kansas Economic Opportunity Corp food bank for distribution by ECKAN. Also on display are Pearl Harbor anniversary papers from Dec. 8 1941 Kansas City Journal and Dec. 9 1941 Kansas City Times loaned by Glen Montgomery, on top floor reference case through Dec. 15.

Walker honored for health care leadership in Kansas

Senator Doug Walker of Osawatomie and Mrs. Petey Cerf Lawrence were cited at a University of Kansas ceremony for long term elderly care advocacy and community service. Cerf earned Citizen of the Year while Walker was named Public Official of the Year for health reform efforts and universal insurance advocacy.

KU senior wins Rhodes scholarship

Pamela McElwee, a senior from Lawrence, Kansas, has won a Rhodes scholarship announced by KU Honors Program director Michael Young. Finalists from Kansas State include Jill Baisinger and Jean Sonnenfield. McElwee majors in political science and environmental studies and aims for forestry graduate work and tropical forestry development.
