New standardized food labels aim to help shoppers compare brands
The Associated Press reports that new labels will define terms like light and high fiber, require calories and nutrient amounts, and show a sample 2000 calorie daily diet. Labels will be voluntary for produce, fish, and fresh meat, with restaurants largely exempt. Experts say the rules empower consumers to improve diets and reduce health risks.

North Kansas City to vote on riverboat gambling
North Kansas City voters will decide a riverboat gambling measure on February 2. Councilman Gene Owen cited 61 percent support in the November statewide referendum, noting a 120 acre Rock Creek site could host a riverboat dock, marina, and a nine hole golf course amid regional competition. Parkville has already approved riverboat gambling.
