City OKs property assessments and pay raise for 1993

Ottawa City Commission authorized $499,967 for industrial park work with city share $126,619 and $373,347 assessed to over 40 park properties. Thompson's Addition street work costs $16,956, shared by three benefiting properties. Sewer extension costs split city $4,719 and private shares $1,508 and $3,405. A 2% across the board city employee pay hike was approved, effective January 1993. higher earners get increases funneled to a retirement fund. All actions passed unanimously.

GM to Close Seven Plants in Major Restructuring

General Motors announced the closure of seven to possibly nine plants as part of a plan to shut 21 plants by 1995. The layoffs affect about 18,900 workers with some transferring, others laid off into a benefits pool. Closures include Flint truck assembly, Delco Chassis in Livonia, and Kalamazoo fab plant, plus sites in Wilmington, Syracuse, Euclid, Trenton, Sioux City, and St. Catharines. Production moves target Orion Township and Flint for current models. future assignments for Wentzville and other plants to be decided.

Equipment snafu delays jail project in Franklin County

TCI to offer 500 channels with new digital system

ENGLEWOOD AP John Malone of Tele- Communications Inc announced a new compressed digital system to deliver 500 channels by January 1994. TCI plans to buy up to 1 million digital terminals and will extend similar services to satellite dish customers by mid-1993, marking a major shift in consumer television.

Discovery crew frees secret Pentagon satellite in space

SPACE CENTER Houston AP Discovery's five astronauts on a seven day mission released a secret Pentagon satellite, later waking to continue work. The crew nicknamed dogs of war say the mission centers on Defense Department tasks. NASA lifted the blackout after satellite release into a 230 mile orbit.

Catholics and Church Reach Abuse Settlement

In Boston 68 people who allege sexual abuse by a priest in the 1960s reached a settlement with the Roman Catholic Church. Plaintiffs accuse the church of reassigning James Porter amid complaints in the Fall River Diocese.
