Hospital notes report admissions including Mrs John Emery of Richmond and Nathan McNary from Rainsboro Ohio along with Richard Mendell of 316 S Mulberry and Mrs Bert Krull of 302 S Sycamore. Births include Dale McWilson route 1 daughter born Thursday and W L Trader 615 Logan daughter born today. Dismissals include Mrs Raymond Walter and baby daughter of Rantoul today.
Luther L. Cook of Sayre Oklahoma was sentenced to one to five years in the Kansas State Penitentiary after pleading guilty in District Court yesterday to passing bogus checks. Judge W N Calkins passed the sentence.
A district court action in Lyndon seeks to enjoin Quenemo high school and junior district No. 9 from issuing bonds for school buildings. Plaintiffs led by T W McDonald allege improper sale procedures and non circulation of a legal notice. The case follows prior rulings allowing bond sales despite valuation changes.
Funeral services for Lotie Johnson of Wellsville were held at the Wellsville Baptist church after she died Tuesday night in an Emporia hospital. She lived in Wellsville from 1924 until ten days before her death at age 72. A former restaurant operator and inn owner, she later ran a rooming house. Survivors include son Oscar of Pawhuska Oklahoma, daughter Verna Taylor of Haines City Florida, two granddaughters, two brothers and five sisters.
Oklahoma City hosts the plan to stage a nationwide contest to select the architecture for the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. The American Institute of Architects may run the contest, expected to take about six months, with dedication tentatively set for 1957 during Oklahoma’s semi centennial.
New York public relations consultant Ivan Black and foreign film importer Harold Salemson refused to answer questions before the House Un American Activities subcommittee probing Communist influence in entertainment. Black invoked five amendments including the First and Fifth and Salemson cited the First and Fifth. The panel heard 23 witnesses in four days, with hearings to resume in Washington in about a month.
TOPEKA The Weather Bureau reports little change in Kansas weather for the next two days with mostly fair skies through Saturday. Overnight lows in the 60s to low 70s and highs in the 90s dominate, while the five day outlook expects 4 to 6 degrees above normal and precipitation under .10 inch. Maximums yesterday ranged from 90 at Dodge City to 99 at Wamego, with lows from 61 at Garden City to 73 at Olathe.
Roscoe Mendenhall, 50, says he pushed his invalid wife Elizabeth, 38, nearly a thousand miles in a wheelchair from Miami toward Florida's sunshine for her health. A wheel tire loosened, a passerby alerted police, and they were jailed in New Albany. The couple, from Hot Springs, Arkansas, had saved 260 dollars, planned braces and sunshine aid, then returned when work failed.
Irving Kansas special report on Sara Deibert opposing Turtle Creek dam and criticizing Senator Andrew Schoeppel for his support of funds to continue flood control and water conservation construction. Deibert deems his letter to friends illogical and defends her view against the dam’s necessity.
Pittsburg Kansas city commission approved an ordinance to let the state act as agent for the city in building a US 69 bypass on the west edge of Pittsburg. Construction is expected this fall or early winter. The project includes relocating a highway section from the south city limits about half a mile.
Walter OMalley, president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, said both the Dodgers and the New York Giants might move their franchises out of New York City. He spoke at a meeting with Mayor Robert Wagner and officials, noting Brooklyn may relocate if no suitable site is found for Dodger games. He warned the move could involve both teams but could still allow games in the broader NYC area.
