Cattle loads were shipped from the Gridley area this week as part of regional market activity. A series of notes covers Legion, a Paola beauty contest, bypass promotion for US 150, local accidents, court actions, store openings, and residents moving between Ottawa and Paola.
Obituary notices report the death of Mrs. Ella Scott aged 87 of 919 North Main, with details of her Franklin County pioneer life, survivors, and funeral plans. A Paola student will reach third grade this term. A $27,000 remodel recommendation for the Santa Fe depot in Olathe has been prepared by railway architects and the local agent Rudy Whitney. Whitney says the recommendations are still in the tentative stage. Jep H. Bennett, sergeant in the air corps, stationed at Greenville, D C, is expected to leave the hospital this week after glandular fever treatment. He has been in the hospital for several weeks and will be unable to return to duty for weeks while he recovers. His parents, Mr and Mrs F R Bennett Jr, are visiting him and his wife in Greenville and will remain there for a time.
Jersey Joe Walcott a former heavyweight champion and Camden police special juvenile investigator helped recapture two youths after a $25 sporting goods store burglary. The teens Albert MacNeill 15 and William Brothers 16 fled from the State Home for Boys and were charged with breaking and entering and larceny.

A prison riot at Great Meadow Correctional Institute ended with eighteen injured inmates and staff. One accidental gunshot wounded two state troopers and a guard as armed inmates were moved back to cells. It marked the first state prison revolt in New York in about a quarter century.
Guards and state police used night sticks and guns as clubs to quell a prison uprising in Comstock New York. The clash lasted about 28 minutes early today as inmates fought security forces.
