Ottawa man recalls low pay and camps during depression

A Dewey resident recalls being chosen for Citizen Military Training camps in Fort Sill Oklahoma and Fort Logan Colorado during the Depression. He worked with Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 to 1934 building roads and fighting forest fires while earning about 10 cents an hour, comparing it to today’s wages and the era’s much lower cost of living.

FBI suspends four officials over Ruby Ridge coverup claims

Officials announced new suspensions following an interim Justice watchdog report alleging that FBI internal inquiries minimized top officials role in approving shoot on sight orders at Ruby Ridge. Deputy AG Gorelick referred the report for possible criminal probes. Freeh ordered suspensions.

Rails pulled out of Ottawa by Union Pacific project

Yard Inc of Omaha works with Union Pacific to remove rails in Ottawa. By Friday the operation reached near West Second Street and Orlis Cox ball fields. Main Street will close briefly early Sunday to remove a rail section at First and Main. Each 1,440 foot segment takes 15 to 20 minutes to remove. The salvage company sells usable rails and scraps the rest. City officials plan a Monday meeting with railroad and Yard Yard representatives to arrange street repairs, with the city or contractor handling surfaces as needed.
