OPD Geared for McGruff Camp at Chippewa

Forty nine youngsters entering sixth grade will attend the Ottawa Police Department McGruff Camp at Camp Chippewa, about 50 miles west, from Thursday to Sunday. Camp offers safety instruction, recreation, and team contests with activities like horseback riding, canoeing, BB gun shooting, and archery. The camp closes with a 2 to 4 pm awards picnic. Captain Daryl Shutt organized the event but will miss at least three months after a parachuting accident last Sunday.

Salina police rule out I-70 killer link in motel death

Salina police discounted theories that the Mid-America Inn clerk Oliver Bigler were killed by the I-70 killer. Investigators collected evidence, noted the front doors were locked, an empty safe found outside, and said the homicide is not tied to the I-70 series or a Wichita teen cleaning store clerk case. No arrests have been made.

Three Escapees Remain At Large In Kansas Search

Three inmates from Ellsworth County Jail, Shawn Rosenberg Roger Love Jr and Keith Wheeler, eluded capture for six days as authorities from Ellsworth Russell counties city police and Kansas Highway Patrol pursue them near Dorrance. The trio armed with stolen handguns were linked to drive by shootings and face multiple counts and sentences. Ground and aerial search efforts aided by tracking dogs have found no trail amid muddy wet conditions and rain.

Judge orders mental evaluation for Lawrence bank robber

A federal magistrate in Lawrence has ordered 50 year old Carol Ann Scroggins, a transient, to undergo a competency evaluation after her detention hearing on a bank robbery. The case alleges she displayed a toy pistol and demanded $3,000 from a Columbia Savings and Loan employee.

County votes to upgrade computer system in appraiser's office

Franklin County commissioners approved 17200 for upgrading the appraiser's office computer system to include map making and 11096.50 for road signs from National Sign Company. They will also participate in a federal housing program and hire Roy Baker for 14 weeks of consulting and staff training.
