Wellsville District approves 1992-93 budget with mills cut

The Wellsville Board of Education approved the 1992-93 budget reducing mills by 30.63 and boosting state funded revenue under a new school finance plan. Projected 1993 spending reaches 6,059,704 versus 4,441,577 in 1992, largely due to capital outlay transfers and duplicated line items. The district will rely on 49.72 local mills, with state aid totaling 4,098,960 for the general fund.

Prison growth eyed but space remains ample in Kansas

Corrections Secretary Gary Stotts told a legislative committee that Kansas prisons will rise to within about 100 inmates of capacity, with an estimated 28 new inmates monthly through mid 1993. Current total, including work release and county jails, reached 6,214, while capacity stands at 6,622 under a 1989 federal order.

Man Injured in Drive-By Shooting in Kansas

Riley County authorities investigate a drive by shooting on US 77 that struck a man multiple times. Radio station KJCK in Junction City reported the victim may be a prosecutor from a drug task force. He was hospitalized. condition not released.

New school finance law to tighten budgets in Kansas

Kansas ended the fiscal year with a $19.2 million general fund surplus but faces heavy future costs for the new school finance plan. Legislative analyst Richard Ryan warned that the plan could require at least $310 million in new general fund money in 1994 and 1995, eroding balances and forcing substantial cuts if revenue grows slowly or balances shrink.
