Senate approves extra lights for railroads

Senator Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas secured Senate passage on a voice vote for a measure to add ditch or strobe lights to locomotives to improve crossing visibility. Three nabbed in Salina motel clerk death

Salina police arrested Andrew Juan Anthony and Anis Scooby Swafford for the beating death of a 71 year old motel clerk. Both faced first degree murder felony murder aggravated robbery and felony theft charges with $500000 bonds. A 17 year old girl was also arrested and a fourth suspect is sought.

Area schools announce free and reduced meal rules

The Ottawa area outlines income eligibility for free or reduced price meals under the National School Lunch and Breakfast programs for 1992 93. Rates vary by household size with specific free and reduced thresholds, breakfast 30 cents and lunch 40 cents. Applications available anytime at each school principal's office. Sabotage Suspected in Amtrak Train Derailment

In Newport News Virginia the FBI says evidence of sabotage exists at the derailment site after Amtrak's Colonial from New York to Newport News jumped the tracks near the station. Seventy people were hurt, none seriously, and CSX Transportation notes a broken lock on the switch box prior to the derailment on Wednesday evening near eight miles from the station.

County approves bridge work and subdivision plans in Franklin County

The Franklin County Commission, with Gary Shofner supervising phase five, okays a Kel sey Creek bridge on Kentucky Road and two box culverts west of Princeton. Project cost is 169714 dollars, with 70 work days for bridges. Also approves Country Estates plat by Don Leadbetter and notes a 2000 dollar Southwestern Bell Foundation gift to the Kansas Independent College Fund for an Ottawa University scholar. Sacred Heart registration shifts follow weekend masses with specific Saturday and Sunday slots.
