Two moderates lose BOE seats in Kansas primary
In Topeka AP reports two incumbent Republican board members Val DeFever of Independence and Sonny Rundell of Syracuse fell to conservative challengers. The outcome narrows the moderate coalition to five seats versus four conservatives with one seat undecided, amid a broader debate over school evolution and funding. Local races included Connie Morris of St Francis winning the 5th District with 60 percent. Rundell 40 percent. DeFever 46 percent to Iris Van Meter 54 percent. No Democrats ran in the 5th and 9th districts, making the primary decisive.
