Ottawa City commissioners voted 4 1 to raise the mill levy to 45 298 for a 1.571 mill increase, about 43 more each month for a 100 000 home. Commissioner Jeff Richards dissented arguing for a flat rate despite reductions from the staff recommendation.
Franklin County hosts five pre statehood buildings. Among them Dietrich Cabin in Ottawa City Park, dating to 1859, moved from Princeton and open Sundays in warm months. The Judge Hanway Homestead at 658 Virginia Road features two coraline marble homes maintained by Bill and Nancy Sanders.
Shirley Broers owns the limestone Tany Jones Mansion near Tally Creek Bridge. The 2 1/2 story house, built by Ottawan John Tecumseh Jones, features walnut stairs and original doors. Restoration spans years as she aims to reveal its history and charm.
At 11 Wheatland Farms near Ottawa, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition volunteers flood in to aid the Allen and Gina Hill home project. More than 3,000 people are expected this week, contributing baked goods and on site labor in triple digit heat, with the episode set to air in September. Toni Blodgett coordinates volunteer check in, releasing forms and supplies to teams.
