Kansas marriage amendment faces ballot debate in Topeka

Text of the proposed Kansas Constitution amendment on Tuesday’s ballot would define marriage as between one man and one woman and void other marriages. It would bar recognition of any relationship other than marriage for rights or incidents of marriage, drawing supporters from religious groups and critics who warn of broader harms to gays, lesbians, and unmarried partners. The measure draws opposition from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and advocates cite potential impacts on hospitals, inheritance, and parental rights, while supporters argue it protects traditional marriage and could aid a federal amendment effort.
