The Osceola Record begins a Mystery Farm feature with 52 aerial photos of area farms. Readers must identify the farms from the shots taken by Zekan-Robbins of Harlan Iowa. First 25 callers win a prize. the mystery farmer receives a mounted enlargement.
Off The Cuts columnist vent idly about spring and fall house cleaning. The author laments backaches and endless chores while joking about a fantasy paper house to avoid cleaning altogether and striking back someday when oil is struck.
Lincoln reports that a failed seven cent gasoline tax repeal petition showed money and a solid plan are essential. The Farm Council and Nebraska Farmers union gathered 28 700 valid names, short of the 56 000 needed, while factions blamed the Nebraska Motor Carriers Association for not joining.
Polk County Wildlife Club and the State Game Commission cleaned Adelson and Overland Sand Pits at Clarks using rotenone to kill rough fish. About 500 to 750 people observed. Carps and buffalo fish were mostly slain while bass and catfish survived for fall stocking.
Busy Belles Extension Club will meet with Mrs. Fred Husak on Wednesday October 2. Cub Scouts gathering occurs Friday September 27 at the Scout Cabin at 7 30 p m.
Mrs. Robert Sigler Jr was elected president of the T and C Club at a meeting held at Mrs Gerhardt Lux home. New officers include Mrs John Blodig secretary Mrs Orval Eikenhorst treasurer Mrs Dale Nahrstedt reporter Mrs Gerhardt Lux music Mrs Allen Kresha health Mrs Dale Frizzell courtesy Mrs David Rutter. Achievement Day set for October 7 and prizes awarded to Mrs Blodig and Mrs Rutter. Next meeting planned at the home of Mrs Allan Krea.
Operators of Osceola's three barber shops announce a unified schedule. All shops will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m. weekdays, with Saturday closing at 11:00 p.m. Albert Ryan Art McVeigh and Les Anderson issued the notice.
The Polk County Teachers Association held its first meeting of the 1957 58 school year at Polk last Thursday. Officers include president Mrs Elvira Houderscheldt Shelby vice president Doyle Howitt Polk secretary Nadine Jaax Shelby treasurer Jean Brigham Shelby. Executive committee members named from Shelby Osceola Stromsburg Polk are Wm Classen Dora Lockard Mrs Bernice Austin Imogene Hanquist. Vocal solos by Arlene Johnson and Karen Nelson. Film A Desk for Billie shown. President Mrs Houderscheldt and Vice President Mr Howitt will attend the Lincoln Delegate Assembly December 6 7. Meeting adjourned until November 21 when Shelby teachers host.
Osceola communities are urged to enter floats for Homecoming Day at Osceola Schools next Friday. The parade begins 2:30 pm at the school house, travels around courthouse square, then returns. Candidates for Homecoming Queen and the Osceola band will join.
Adrian Lewis arrived in Osceola last week after his Army discharge following two years in Alaska. He stays with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lewis. Pvt. George Brown reached Osceola from Fort Riley on Saturday for a two week furlough with his mother Mrs. Tressie Brown.
Funeral services were held at Kepner Mortuary for Mrs Ruie Lindquist Dona van a former Osceola resident. Rev Erwin Kiel officiated and she was buried in Osceola cemetery. She was born February 19 1889 and died September 15 1957 in San Francisco California. She married Luther E Lindquist 1907 and to them two sons Milton C and J Floyd were born. Her husband Luther died in 1934 and later she married Robert E Donavan in 1940. She is survived by her two sons two grandchildren and other relatives. Floyd Lindquist of Chula Vista accompanied the casket to Osceola.
Osceola's FHA Chapter held its formal initiation on Wednesday evening September 25 in the high school auditorium. Mothers of the members attended as special guests. Nyla Pehrson led devotions, Dorothy Watts and Barbara Wiesenman performed, and new members were presented by an old member. The ceremony reviewed the FHA creed and member responsibilities. Lunch was served afterwards.
Osceola powered to a 38 12 victory at Stromsburg as Curtis Bryan rushed 203 yards including a 57 yard scamper. Rodger Wright added 96 and Larry Frizzell 68 with Bryan scoring three TDs and Wright two. Osceola showed resilience amid wet field conditions and aims for another conference test at St Paul next Friday.
The Daisy Dairy 4-H Club met September 13 at Valley Church with 15 members. Kathryn Pliefke became president and secretary in absentia. The group handed in record books and discussed Ak-Sar-Ben. On September 20 Lora Lee Dawes and Diane Scherer showed cattle there earning Cow Blue and awards in Sr Yearling Purple and Junior Herd Red for Dawes and Cow Blue for Scherer.
Funeral services conducted at Wesley Methodist Church Shelby for Harry L E Gonnerman born June 12 1897 at Gresham Nebraska and died September 19 at Shelby Rev George S Goodwin led rites and interment followed at Blue Ridge cemetery.
All Osceola former residents in or near Los Angeles are notified the Osceola Picnic will be held Sunday October 6 in South Gate Park South Gate. Sarah Campbell Acting President.
The 1958 Winter Wheat Acreage Reserve signup runs August 26 to October 4 1957. USDA ASC reports show 37 189 acreage reserve agreements covering 1 005 952 acres signed through September 6 with potential payments totaling 20 574 724. Nebraska data note 51 366 acres under 1910 agreements for 1 242 033.
A group of Central City relatives hosted a picnic at Osceola park Sunday to honor Harry Johnson of Seattle Washington. The gathering included numerous Johnsons and spouses from Central City Grand Island Shelby Stromsburg and other nearby towns with Johnson departing for Seattle after a ten day visit.
The Polk County WCTU convention met at the Baptist Church in Stromsburg on Wednesday September 17 starting at ten o clock. The program featured devotional readings, prayers, poems, talks by Rev. John H. Carlson and Mrs. Carl Lof, musical selections and a noon luncheon. The day closed with the treasurer's report read by Miss Lulu Hendrickson.
Elmer Gleim and wife of Osceola were surprised when their sons Mac and Ernie Gleim circled their Polk County home on consecutive days. Mac, an A4D Sky Hawk pilot from Litch Field, Arizona, was en route to Jacksonville, Florida. Ernie, a Grumman S2F naval instructor, flew from Boston to Hutchinson, Kansas. Both grandsons of James McKeag Sr. and Osceola High School alumni.
The Muse Theatre launches its new calendar policy with October and November show listings in The Record. The calendar is for readers use and should be kept for reference. Theatre Manager Bill Zedicher says this issue will be the only calendar published this month, with limited copies at The Muse box office.

Osceola firemen announce their regular September meeting will be held this Thursday evening. The notice notes the gathering is the monthly session for the Osceola Fire Department with members expected to attend.
