Tasting Tea Brings Polk County Extension Party

The annual Tasting Tea at the Viking Center Stromsburg drew about 150 women. Extension Council president Mrs Don Conkling opened with remarks and a humorous reading. Debettes 4 H Club wore Bicentennial costumes and sang. Mrs Wesley Fredrickson spoke on houseplants with emphasis on cacti. Tea offered brunch and snack foods. recipe folders were shared.

Cinderella crop to help soybean farmers gain edge

Eugene Glock of Rising City Nebraska ASA vice president says domestic oil market research and a new winter nursery in Belize aim to speed soybean variety development. He notes soybeans known as Cinderella face political risk but provide freedom to plant and market, with Nebraska production rising from 48 to 200 million dollars between 1970 and 1976.

Osceola Bulldogs tame visiting Tigers 19 0 in football

Osceola Bulldogs defeated Cedar Rapids Tigers 19-0 last Friday night. Dan Bond scored twice including a 60 yard punt return for the other TD. Bond led rushers with 94 yards on 15 carries as Osceola held Cedar Rapids to four first downs and 61 rushing yards. Scott Conkling completed a hospital transfer after surgery on his right leg.

Co-Op Grain Holds 65th Annual Meeting in Columbus

About 1000 stockholders attended the Farmers Cooperative Grain Company annual meeting in Columbus. Changes to by laws passed to create seven districts and allow a non stockholder to join the board. Directors elected were Carroll Blaser Carroll Melliger and Tom Schmidt. General Manager Joe Headrick reported on growth including Columbus Grain Company purchase and facility upgrades. Don Lehr from Far Mar Co spoke on cooperatives. Door prizes and a barbecue followed.

Osceola Names Maud Magnuson First Green Thumb Worker

Maud Magnuson becomes Osceola library aide under the Nebraska Green Thumb Project. The program, sponsored by the National Farmers Union and U S Department of Labor, offers part time 24 hour weeks at 230 an hour with age and income qualifications.
