A rose at Jeffrey Elementary and two locust trees mark campus beautification funded by grade school classes. The issue notes fall homecoming plans, Jewish New Year observances, weather reporting quirks, letters from the past, a 50 year golf memory, and upcoming community events through September 22.
A letter from L. A. Gushee reports health and farming progress. He notes crops look well but need rain and details 18 acres oats with self binder, 45 acres corn, 100 hogs, 15 cows and calves, seven horses, and barbed wire hog lot fencing. Marys sister Mrs Vincent visiting. Daisy keeps a pet lamb. A young boarder helps. He mentions a barn built and a July Fourth picnic and dance.
A Women Involved in Farm Economics meeting at the Osceola Legion Club on September 12 drew 52 attendees. The steering committee set regular meetings for the first and third Thursdays at 8 p.m. and voted no membership fee with donations accepted. Members donating included Brenda Dunn and others. A report on the coal slurry pipeline was presented. Next meeting is October 6.
Osceola high school football beat Cedar Rapids 26 to 0 in an away game. Joe Graham scored on a three yard run in the second quarter and Randy Reese added the two point conversion to lift the Bulldogs to an 8 nothing halftime lead.
Seventy-eight American Legion members attended the William Wolfe Post 91 membership feed on Tuesday evening September 6 with 57 remaining for the first 1977 78 meeting. State commander Wayne Davis Hay Springs and other Nebraska Legion officials installed officers including Alan Russell commander and Michael Anderson first vice commander. The new leadership faces deciding which activities to fund or how to raise money to continue programs such as a $500 student grant Boy Scouts Cornhusker Boys State July Fourth fireworks display baseball and softball programs and other civic efforts.
Funeral services were held for Earl Hardle 79 at First United Methodist Church Silver Creek and for Bernard V. Hilger 64 at St Marys David City. Osceola beat Cedar Rapids 26 0 as Graham rushed for 205 yards. Arthur Senkbeil returned from the Nebraska State Fair with 44 ribbons and a gift certificate.
The Osceola Bulldogs opened their 1977 season at home with wins in both varsity and junior varsity contests. Freshmen lost in two sets, while the varsity prevailed 2-0 led by Melanie Oquist 12 points and Paula Smith 10. Deb Neujahr led serves and spikes for the Bulldogs. Alumni notes include Mark Tonniges returning to Kearney State College as a student coach.
Dr. James Pipher joins Polk County Mental Health Association at Osceola United Methodist Church this fall. He, a Nebraska native with UNL and UTMB training, works as clinical psychologist at Pioneer Mental Health Center. Jan Zegers and Becky Bingen join weekly Tuesday sessions. Wilma Headrick coordinates and handles appointments.
