In Polk County the week ending last Saturday brought 20 inches of rain. Surface moisture is short while subsoil moisture remains adequate. Alfalfa and wild hay are excellent. Corn is 50 percent in the dough stage and 50 percent dented but not hard. Sorghum is about 40 percent turning and alfalfa is in its third cutting with about 10 percent completed. Late spring and rains slow sorghum and corn maturation. Livestock are in good condition with good pasture.

Polk County board finalizes total valuation at 34 999 017 dollars up from 32 663 299 with intangibles shifts. Mill levy set at 11 69, with school, city, and bond levies varying by district and location including Osceola Shelby Stromsburg and Polk city limits. A property valued at 1000 dollars would owe about 62 87 in taxes for local government and schools.
