Osceola readers confront last week Ridge Runner column about how women use desks in the household. The piece mocks target areas from kitchen tables to pantry floors then shifts to town topics on street cleanliness, clock changes, local businesses, and Veterans Day observances.
Work began on the Jeffrey School addition after Johnson Plumbing & Heating was selected as general contractor at the October 14 bid opening. Five bids were submitted with Johnson’s at 49 573 dollars, about 1 000 lower than the next bid. Construction started October 25 with an April 1 completion target. brick delays noted but ground work below grade block work and cement floor pours proceed before freezing.
Osceola's Community Theatre reorganizes for 1971 72 and names A Christmas Carol as the first production. The group will meet at 9 30 Thursday October 28 at the Muse Theatre. Volunteers are invited with emphasis on costumes and sets. The production aims for a first performance near Christmas time.
World traveler Danny Lisko will present the program “My Wife for 20 Cows” at 7 30 p m Tuesday November 16 in the Osceola gymnasium. Students with activity tickets admitted free. adults pay 1. The note also mentions a new two classroom addition and storage space next to the kitchen, planned in brick and block to match the existing building, with George Clayton & Assoc as architects.
Osceola enhances its downtown with a newly repainted Muse Theatre front. Owner Bill Zedicher reports weeks of exterior and interior work including a new marquee doors lobby refinishing and a 24 hour flag with night spotlights.
OHS Bulldogs defeated Polk Cubs 6-0 as Gary Workman praised Polk defense while noting strong play from seniors Steve Kumpf and Roger Augustin. Kumpf tied for team lead with 12 tackles. Augustin anchored line and played solid linebacker. Punting by Mike Van Hoosen and Roger Carlstrom helped keep yards even, and Chris Hayes scored the lone touchdown after a fumble recovery on the 23.
Mrs. Carl Carlstrom of Polk narrowly beats Kent Rodene to win this week’s Armchair Quarterback award after both miss only Purdue at Illinois. Nebraska's 161 passing yards and Carlstrom’s 220 versus Rodene’s 225 were key, with Gary Rodene proving best on Princeton Penn State.
Youth groups from three Osceola churches will collect for UNICEF this Sunday evening October 31. They meet at St Paul Lutheran at 6 30 p m for assignments and return there for refreshments with yellow collection boxes identifying them as UNICEF workers.
Ruth Bachenberg travels for a week long trip to Washington DC and New York City with 71 other high school juniors and seniors. The seminar studies the United Nations Supreme Court and Congress with sponsorship from Methodist Presbyterian and Church of Christ churches.
Polk County officials struggle to implement a 1969 up valuation order from the State Board of Equalization. Farm land values rose 40 percent and town real estate 21 percent, with appeals by some counties and a 1970 Supreme Court ruling on technicalities. Now tax refunds for the 1969 taxes paid in 1970 pose a complex challenge.
Twenty nine ladies attended the Polk County Republican Ladies luncheon in Stromsburg on October 18. Mrs. Irvin Anderson read the club history and Mrs. Carl G. Johnson with Mrs. Raymond Lind blade presented a patriotic program. Officers were re elected: Reuben Hanquist president Harold Carlson vice president Leo Larson secretary Larry Davis treasurer. A bus tour to Lincoln is planned for March 1972.
The local Midget football team will end its season with a Sunday game at 2 p.m. October 31 at Shelby High School field against the Columbus Bears. A follow up gathering for players, parents, coaches and wives is set for 6:30 p.m. at Rising City city hall.
Byron Nelson son of Mr and Mrs Harold Nelson of Osceola pledges Theta Alpha Psi social fraternity at Midland College Fremont He is a sophomore.
The Crismans joined Lay Witness Missions since 1969, traveling thousands of miles to Methodist churches in Kansas Missouri Oklahoma Iowa South Dakota Minnesota and Nebraska. Mr Crisman coordinated four missions most recently at Syracuse Nebraska last Friday. The group plans one more mission in Mitchell South Dakota in November unless called again.
Osceola High School girls volleyball will compete in the Goldenrod Conference tournament November 8 and 9 at Genoa. First round on November 8 includes Silver Creek-St Edward 6 pm Palmer-Stromsboro 6 45 Clarks Genoa 7 30 and Osceola Polk 8 15 with playoff games starting at 6 pm November 9 and a tournament all team selected.
