Victor Cerny, 20, son of Mrs. Mary Cerny, enlisted in the Army Air Corps in September 1942. After basic training at Fort Leavenworth he was sent to Louisville then Blythe Field California in mid October where he serves as an air mechanic.

The Union Pacific Railroad withdrew its petition to discontinue trains Nos 547 and 548 between Lincoln and Grand Island, reserving the right to file again later. Youngsters Active in Polk County Scrap Drive
Polk County AAA reports broad youth participation in a county wide salvage drive. Osceola led with over 3,000 pounds collected before nightfall, while Stromsburg and Shelby also saw strong effort as children used wagons to haul scrap. The county aims to finish tallying amounts remaining on farms and total scrap collected, currently about 1,376,600 pounds locally, roughly 160 pounds per person.
