Mrs John Tongue of Stromsburg died after a collision when a westbound truck turned in front of the Tongue car at an intersection near Seward. She was pinned under the car frame and died at Seward hospital. The funeral was held at the Lutheran church in Stromsburg with many locals paying respects.
Friday marked the close of the first six weeks with strong grades across Osceola High School. About 700 students posted few failures with ten making the Honor Roll and several scoring 90 plus averages led by Leona Pierson and Dorothy Anderson.
At the Polk County Agricultural Society annual meeting officers were re elected and precinct directors changed. A constitutional revision committee was formed with F. B. Kelly Mark Timm and C. B. Knerr to report in December. A premium list committee led by Mrs Raymond Rystrom includes Mrs C H Lindburg and Miss Ida Hanson.
Local residents report tonsil removal for Fairviewian at Central City, multiple visits to Lake Ericson and Grand Island, and hosting of Ladies Aid quilting. Cemetery Association met. various gatherings include dinners, wood sales, and a reception for Rev and Mrs Maxcy.
The Methodist Church led by Handel Collier lists regular services at 10 am Sunday School 11 am Morning Worship 630 pm Epworth Leagues 730 pm Evening Worship and Wednesday 730 pm Mid week service. The Fifth Annual Harvest Festival praised with Alvin and Dick Merrick selling harvest products. All welcome.
Seward defeats Osceola 13 0 behind three hard earned touchdowns by Cardwell as Seward's power drives break through the Osceola line. Osceola nearly reaches a score at half, rallies late, and sees Herrman lead the Bulldogs in a tough defensive effort.
Announcements from Shelby Nebr about a baby arrival for Mr and Mrs Frank Thrasher of Red Cloud. Local social activity includes visits of Mrs Roy Johnson and children, Marie Schelz beginning nursing work at St Catherine's Hospital McCook, and Olive Carter visiting Shelby. Various residents travel to visit relatives and attend gatherings as Emil Schott’s home receives new paint and Mettlen purchases a Chevrolet.
The fifth annual Harvest Festival was held at the Methodist Church over Sunday and Monday with displays of harvest products around the altar. A large audience attended Sunday School and services, and the youth choir led by Mrs. W. E. Thompson performed its first public appearance. Alvin and Richard Merrick acted as auctioneers for gifts on Monday night, followed by a lunch served by the Young Married People's Sunday School Class.

Elijah Gove Chapter D A R held a special Monday gathering at the home of Mrs A V Kielson to honor State Regent Mrs Adam McMullen of Beatrice. A 6:30 dinner preceded an program led by local regent Mrs Whillace Scott featuring an address by Mrs McMullen on D A R topics. Guests included Mrs McMullen of Beatrice and others from Hubbell St Louis Englewood and Englewood Colorado.
A golf tournament on the Stromsburg miniature course drew 32 entrants. Miss Julia Presson of Evanston Illinois spent time with her grandmother Mrs A C Anderson and returned Friday after visiting Lincoln. Albert Hult drove to Seward to bring Mr Tongue home from a fatal auto accident. Mrs C E Nelson of Litchfield visited her mother Mrs Hultgren after returning from Rock Island Illinois with her daughter Mrs Young. The Headlight gains a new printer who moved into the Alfred Peterson house and plans to stay. Several state university students and parents stayed with relatives nearby last week. Thieves stole about twenty five lanterns from the gas company this week. the thief remains at large. Mr and Mrs J P Cunningham of York visited Tuesday night.
The Lieut Richard Farley Chapter of the D A R hosted a one oclock luncheon Tuesday at Mrs Dewey Sigler’s home honoring state regent Mrs Adam McMullen. Halloween decorations set the scene and a short business session preceded a talk by Mrs McMullen. She received a chiffon handkerchief as a chapter gift. Attendees included Miss Allie Mills and numerous Mrs's from Shelby and area.
Sunday October 5 marked Uncle Silas Miller 87th birthday. His son I L Miller and family of Omaha his daughter Mrs Oscar Blevins and family of Millerton and granddaughter Mrs Oliver Craig and family of Millerton joined the celebration. Mike Hoffer and daughter Mrs L Hennings of Osceola attended. Friends wish him many more such birthdays.

A National Beet Growers Association campaign to promote Nebraska grown beet sugar shows strong results in the North Platte valley. Beet harvests are underway under favorable weather. last year drought and a freeze hurt yields. This year conditions are ideal and the four state crop is valued at about 28 million dollars.

The piece reflects on vanished pioneer towns across the U S, where loss of faith and energy doomed communities as progress moved forward and auctions sold remaining lots.

On Friday October 10 60th year since Mrs Mary Ball of Shelby came with her family to Polk County from Geneseo Illinois. They endured frontier hardships then settled near Shelby later moving to town. Mr Ball died fourteen years ago a daughter Mrs George McMeekin died May 1930 and sons Ralph and Phil Ball remain in Shelby. Backlund's ad offers highest cash price for produce by phone.
Four or five carloads of potatoes a day leave Alliance for eastern and southern markets as seed and table stock move. George Neuswanger harvests 240 acres with a 249 bushel yield, while Box Butte county averages 93 bushels. table prices run 70 cents and certified stock 1.50.
