Mrs. Joe Ostry earned the Certificate of Merit after saving her son from a stock tank. She revived him with artificial respiration and treated him for shock, earning high praise from the American Red Cross. Nearby, Blair Water Department plans new wells to ease long standing shortages.
Sharon Dirks of southeast of Ohiowa brought to The Signal office Tuesday an egg with a ridge on one end forming a perfect P. The thicker shelled loop remained open as part of the letter. The egg came from a hen in the Dirks farm flock.
Myron Kluge of Columbus proposes forming Albion based Albion Industries to manufacture electronic fire alarm systems and two way citizens band radios. The plan calls for $30,000 capital, with Albion Industries buying $25,000 stock and $5,000 to Kluge for prior efforts. At a meeting $5,550 was pledged, adding to $10,000 on hand. if $25,000 is raised by this weekend, a decision will move forward with Albion News coverage.
Nebraska senators report a federal grant of eight thousand dollars from the Civil Aeronautics Administration funds the Municipal airport at O Neill. The money covers an administration building, utilities, an entrance road, an auto parking area and fencing. The airport will also receive navigation radio equipment for flight guidance.
A modernistic telephone building valued at 26000 dollars is nearly finished in Ashland to house 212000 dollars worth of dial equipment. Ground was broken on May 15 according to the Ashland Gazette.
Rickey Gene Imig, 20 months old, fell into a watering tank east of Seward Saturday. His brother Rodney, 18, revived him with artificial respiration after he stopped breathing. He recovered at home after a night in the hospital. a toy cow was later found in the tank.
Miss Shirley Anderson of McNabb Illinois, a former Dana College coed and Blair teaching music student, has signed with the Jan Garber orchestra. She will begin as a soloist with the Blair Pilot-Tribune dance band.
Lieut. Col. Howard L. Berg of Neligh received commendation for the Fifty fourth Weather Reconnaisance squadron in Guam. The unit has flown from Guam for nine years and covers a 5,500,000 square mile region to track typhoons and measure their size. The crew reports powerful energy, with chairs ripped from moorings and equipment torn free during storms. Berg is the son of Mrs. Carl Black of Neligh-Neligh News.
Philip Nyberg reports the Jeffrey School District No 19 sold rural buildings and contents for 7028.92 after four days with three buildings sold daily. Top sale went to Rudy Urban of District 2 for 1261.17. Earl Watts bought District 27 items for 1126.55.
Brownie Scout Troop No. 1 met at the Boy Scout cabin to elect officers. Suzanne Trotter was named president and hostess, with Kathy Schneider secretary, Mary Wobig treasurer, Kathy Bond news reporter, and Barbara Klingman chairman. Meeting held Monday October 8 at 4:00 p.m. leaders Mrs. Roy Trotter and Mrs. Bert Gissler.

Osceola fans watched as St. Edward scored in the first quarter and added a second in the second, the half ending 12-0. Rodger Wright produced Osceola’s early defense and a later drive, but penalties and failures kept them from scoring until the final period, when St. Edward secured the 18-6 victory and prepares for a Polk County conference game Friday.
Mr and Mrs A W Contors of Neligh were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Phil Campbell and attended the Lincoln football game on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Vern Johnson and family visited the Claus Johnson family in Lincoln on Sunday.
Congressman Bob Harrison of Nebraska plans to visit Osceola at 1 08 p m and Shelby at 2 40 p m on Wednesday October 17 during his bid for a fourth term. A Republican on the House Agriculture Committee and author of Public Law 480 he helped sell surplus farm products abroad boosting farm prices. He will meet residents on the street to gauge opinions on local and national issues.
Johnson Chevrolet Company plans an annual display of new Chevrolets in Osceola next week. The show will feature the new cars and trucks in Johnson showrooms next Friday October 19 with full details to appear in The Record.
The Polk County Teachers Association holds its first meeting of the school year Monday October 15 at 7 30 p m in the Shelby High School Auditorium. John E Lynch executive secretary of the Nebraska Education Association will speak and all teachers are urged to attend.
Week of September 30 to October 8 lists multiple patient dismissals at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital. Names include Mrs Leonard Nelson Stromsburg Mrs Dwight Swanson York Arthur Buchholz Shelby Victor Hinze Waco Charlie H Lauer Surprise John Albers Shelby and others across Osceola Central City Silver Creek and Culver City.
Federal judge John W. Delehant signed an order for Central Electric & Gas Company preventing Stromsburg and the Condemnation Court from proceeding pending further order. Central seeks a permanent injunction with a hearing date to be set, contesting an April 3 1956 election authorizing condemnation of Stromsburg gas distribution.
Allen E. Barr aged 52 years died Sunday from a self inflicted gunshot wound after a period of ill health. He passed at about 4 p m at the home of his sister Lela Barr in north Shelby. He is survived by a brother Lowell of Osceola. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Shelby Methodist Church with Kepners in charge.
Mike and Patty Polk of Davey Nebr spent the weekend with grandparents Mr and Mrs Charles Youngstrom. Mr and Mrs J T Riblett were Sunday visitors in the Mr Hess home. Beulah Cemetery Society meets with Mrs Nelson King at Polk on Friday October 19.
The Osceola Farm Bureau met at Odd Fellows Hall on Tuesday October 9 electing officers led by President Henry Galus and Vice President Charles L. Walgren. Delegates to the State Convention include Gallus Imm Speirs Tewell Warner and others. Bernie Camp spoke from the Farm Bureau State Office. Natalie Hahn and Gerald Giles performed readings. Luncheon for about 60 attendees followed.
The Busy Belles gathered October 3 at Mable Poe’s home with 12 members and two guests. Verna Cappann led the meeting and Marie Meister and Mable Poe taught Distinction Through Accessories. A short party for Delores Meister and baby followed with lunch served by the hostess. Reporter Miss Pearle Matheson of Fremont visited Mrs Geo Matheson earlier in the week. Harold Matheson of Shelby joined for dinner Monday.
Builders expect the Jeffrey District No. 19 grade school to be completed and ready for occupancy around Thanksgiving after delays from roofing material shortages and a steel strike. Crews are active in carpentry tiling painting plastering paving and plumbing with asphalt tile floors to begin soon. Final grading landscaping will occur within two weeks and partial use of the building may occur before full completion.
Robert Peterson arrived home Saturday after receiving an honorable discharge from the Army at Fort Sheridan Illinois He is the son of Mr and Mrs Einfred Peterson and has served overseas for the past 18 months.
Nebraska dairymen will adopt three milk recording options this fall the standard Dairy Herd Improvement program the Owner Sampler System and the new Weigh A Day A Month plan. The latter requires farmers to weigh each cow’s milk morning and night once monthly with no samples or butterfat tests.
October 15 named Poetry Day nationwide. Thelma Allinder from Osceola presents Autumn Byroads about autumn foliage and migrating birds. Her poems Beyond The Purple Dusk and Muted Choral join future anthologies. Her work appears in 115 markets to date.
The Back to the Bible Broadcast director Dr Theodore H Epp will appear at the Evangelical Free Church Stromsburg on Sunday morning October 14 at ten o clock during Sunday School and again for morning worship If absent, listen on KJSK at 11 for the Free Church hour.

T and C Club meets October 17 at 2 15 p m at the Community Building Fair Grounds. Camera Club meets October 17 at 8 00 p m at the VFW Hall Stromsburg. In local play Lincoln hosts a late Cornhuskers win 9 7 on a Harshman field goal, and Wright scores for a 0 0 defeat. Polk County Soil Bank payments top 2 million for corn and wheat.
