George W. Norris United States Senator from Nebraska will address Osceola on Saturday October 27 indoors with a capacity audience expected. He will discuss the one house plan for the state legislature and his visit is urged by J N Norton. The senator is described as a leading figure in national life.
The Osceola school week covers kindergarten to high school notes. Students study Indians with wigwams and papoose crafts, perfect attendance, a Chinese display in fourth grade, Lincoln highway geography, and a Friday school program with music. Damrosch radio programs begin, report cards next week, and eighth grade plans for Fire Prevention Week.
Large crowd attends the official opening of the Polk County Livestock Commission in Stromsburg with free pancakes and coffee provided by the Stromsburg Community Club. The new sale yards are well equipped and weekly sales begin, with a fine livestock consignment in the opening event.
With drought causing uneven maturation, Nebraska sorghum seed could be scarce next year. Experts advise harvesting mature heads, preserving seed from adapted varieties, and using methods such as topping and silo storage to protect germination. Kansas and other states face similar seed shortages.
The local field hosted a Friday football clash ending 13 to 0 with the visitors prevailing. Parish activities included Rally Day at the Baptist Church, a World Series outing for local residents, and various community gatherings. Notables such as Irvin Anderson and Miss Lillie Chindgren joined trips to St. Louis and the World’s Fair, while neighborhood moves and visits continued through the weekend.
St Andrews residents visit Julius Nebosis home and many local youths attend Duncan wedding dances hosted by the Wemboffs and Millers with the Duncan orchestra. Elsie and Virginia Bernt visit near Shelby. Altar Society hosts at Hubert Jaax home. Bernt family visits near Columbus. Nazbosis and Thomasciewicz travel to El Dorado. Tschauner visits Alfred Bernt. School district 9 loses to district 39 in Friday game.
The West Side community reports visits to Lincoln York and Clarks. A Swede Plain Ladies Aid meeting named Mrs Dana Shostrom as leader with hostesses Mrs Adelson Moberg and Mrs Fredrickson. Local birthdays and anniversaries celebrated with dinners and buffets. World Series attendance noted by several residents. Lillie Chindgren and Dana Shostrom returned from Chicago Century of Progress trip.
A baby boy was born on October 3 to Mr and Mrs Henry Olson. A daughter Shirley Anne born October 4 to Mr and Mrs Paul Yngelher at Osceola Hospital. William Dunbier underwent an appendectomy at Osceola Hospital performed by Dr Harley Eklund on Friday.

Attendance at Wesley Chapel for Rally Day totaled fifty with Family Day planned for next Sunday. Honorable Mentions and flowers will be awarded to the largest family present. Several meetings and visits occur around the church including missionary society on Thursday and Church Aid Friday evening.
Osceola led Shelby at all times until a late turnover changed the game. Elliott intercepted a pass at the 50 yard line and returned it for a touchdown but the extra point failed. The team thanks fans for their attendance and loyalty.
The Stoner Club will meet next Wednesday October 17 with Anna Johnson Daisy Zang and Winnie Johnson assisting. Evelyn Richards will be program leader and each member is asked to answer roll call with a one sentence using the letters of Hallowe'en as the initial words.
Mr and Mrs John Rasp and family visited Moorfield Nebraska at the start of the week. Mrs Ball travels to Albin Wyoming to visit daughters and teach near Albin. Local families visit relatives in Exeter Richland Omaha and San Diego plans.
The University of Nebraska college of agriculture hosts an emergency livestock day on Friday from 9 15 a m to 3 30 p m. Polk County farmers are invited. Speakers include H J Gramlich, W H Brokaw, M A Alexander, F E Musseh, H P Davis, W J Leffel, P H Stewart, O R Thalman, and L Oscar Chaillman among others.
Farmers in this county will discuss latest bindweed control methods at demonstrations organized by the agricultural agent on October 18. The sessions include Ed Zangen’s farm in Osceola at 10:00 a m Harry Obrist Hackberry precinct at 1 30 p m and Norton Estate Farm Pleasant Home Precinct at 3 30 p m D L Gross from the agricultural college extension service will share experience from other counties and Lincoln. Hundreds of Nebraska farmers battle the weed with sodium chlorate and cultural practices as dry weather exposes its moisture drain.
Mrs Nina Hopkins and daughter spent the weekend with her parents in Silver Creek. Emil and Hattie Lucas visited the Joe Wieseman home in Osceola. Miss Vertie Heitzman receives care for an ulcerated ankle at Heitzman home. Hazel Norris visited Central City with relatives. Several couples shared Sunday dinners including H A McCormick and Lou Collier households. The Happy Hour Society met at Gladys Buchta’s, Grace McCormick assisting. Visitors to W B Duke home included Leroy Rhodes Calmar Dunn and families, Mina Buchta Bettie Christensen Clair McCormick. The Fernandez family visited Osceola, Guildford Bryan's family entertained George Buchta. Mrs Wilma Sandra and Patsy return to Miami, Florida. Mrs Need accompanies them. Laverne Dake visited Fullerton. Sun evening gatherings at Joe Need home featured Tom Meacham George Heinemeyer and Bettie Christian. Wm Buchta of David City called on Mina Buchta. Howard Deeter and Arthur Deeter guests of Hilbert Buchta. Earl Watts family spent Sunday at Sam Cadwell’s. George Buchta visited David City. Hilbert Buchta joined Uncle John Buchta of Osceola on Illinois trip with Walter Herrmann of Iowa City.
The St Pauls Lutheran Church Women’s Missionary Society meets Friday at 2 30 p m at Mrs Ernest Nyquist home with Rev and Mrs Trued as guest speakers on mission fields and the China awakening. Sunday services include Sunday School at 10 a m Worship at 11 a m and Vespers at 7 30 p m. Choir practice Tuesday and Luther League gathering hosted by Mr and Mrs Martin Anderson and Miss Otelia Johnson with the day to be announced. PAUL MELIN, Pastor.
