Polk County 4-H Club Finishes Strong Year 1936

Polk County boys and girls completed 1936 4-H club work with 129 participants, up from 89 in 1935. They produced beef calves hogs corn baked clothing and more, and earned top honors at the Polk County fair Columbus show and the State Fair with Bertha Richter winning a major style prize. Extension plans indicate 4-H will be central to 1937 program.

Rising City Woman Killed in Train Collision

Mrs. Kenneth Jones of near Rising City, 34, was killed Friday night when an eastbound Union Pacific freight train struck the automobile she rode in with six others. She fell beneath the train after the car door opened. her 13 month old baby also fell under the rails but escaped death. The driver, Mr. Jones, said the train had paused for water and started after he drove onto the tracks, injuring no one else.

Methodist Church board sets eight point program

A largely attended Official Board meeting at the parsonage Tuesday evening established a Minimum Standard of Efficiency for the church year. The eight point plan includes Vitalized Christian Experience Religious Education Diversified Evangelism World Service program Fellowship through Community Service Balanced finance Visualization of reports and long term equipage.

Governor Cochran to visit Osceola for highway talks

Governor Roy L. Cochran will speak at a noon luncheon hosted by the Osceola Community Club at Hotel Rapp. He discusses proposed changes to Highways 16 and 81 routing through Osceola and hopes construction can start before winter.

Two babies born Wednesday at the Shelby hospital Ethel Jean Pointer eight pounds and Ronald Dean Smith eight pounds to parents LeRoy Pointer and Robert Smith. Osceola Handily Defeats Gibbon On Home Field

Osceola football team crushed Gibbon 219 to 0 on their field last Friday. Ted Rutter scored the opening touchdown, Gissler added a long pass and a TD, Wieseman finished with a plunge. Crouse, Herrman, Oberg and Schmoker anchored a strong line and defense as others saw action. Next Friday Osceola travels to Central City seeking another win.

Fairview Community Welcomes Rev McClure and Family

Poll on County Agent Funding Appears on Ballot

After a petition by more than 400 Polk County farm operators, the board will seek approval to appropriate funds for a county agent. The measure, defeated years ago, returns under a new law once a petition meets the required signers. Only qualified farm operators may sign, but all voters may express their view at the polls.
