Paving on the Osceola highway halted on Tuesday with cement slab about a third complete. The project spans less than a half mile and normally would finish in under three weeks amid tension between engineers and the contractor. Detours affect Gospel Ridge residents, fueling rumor and drama.
Polk and Osceola meet on the football field Friday with Polk aiming to extend a winning streak after three straight victories. Osceola counters with inexperienced but eager players led by backfield pair Wieseman and Mentink and a line featuring McFadden at center and Mills at end.

Shelby residents report a broken arm from a school swing incident involving ten year old Wallace Glatter. Neighboring families travel for meals, visits, and vacations including Idaho, Oklahoma, and Washington state. A newborn baby girl arrived in Columbus to former Shelby residents Mr. and Mrs. Stastny, while Rev. O Boyle takes vacation and Rev. Jaworowski will serve Sacred Heart next Sunday.
Miss Irene Newcomer of Ada Oklahoma arrived here Saturday for a three weeks visit ing her parents Mr and Mrs Charles Newcomer in a vacation stopover.
John Ross Welch born February 6 1852 in Codes Ohio died September 30 1937 at his son H S Welchs home Linco at age 85 years 7 months 4 days He married Annie Sherwood who preceded him in death about eight years ago Funeral services were held October 3 at Kepner Funeral Home with Rev Albert C Monkman Osceola Methodist Church in charge He was father of William Welch of this city and lived on a farm north of Osceola years ago.
Osceola hospital discharged Dorothy Jacobson Stromsburg on Saturday Mrs Clair McCormick on Sunday and Mrs Jack Johnston expected to leave later in the week. Mrs Roy Grossnicklang spent several days in hospital last week. Mr and Mrs Ralph Allison Gresham announce birth of baby boy Gary Bond weighing eight and a half pounds on Friday October 1. Mrs Allison formerly Ruth Bond.
Hackberry Liberty Local No 573 F E C A meets Friday October 8 at Greens Chapel for a nominating primary. Greens Chapel Brotherhood meets October 11 and Ladies Aid October 13 at Mrs. Emmons’s home. Officers elected last week in the Aid included Pres C W Hennings and other officers. County Farmers Union gathering drew about 130 with Rev Ford speaking. Wayland convention attendance noted with young people banquet and lectures by Judge Hastings and Dr Bell. P T A at Victor-Fairview to meet October 12 at Victor School. Social visits and travels around county noted, including births, moves, and guests in several households.
Miss Mildred Wynn and Howard Sundberg were married Monday at the Methodist Church with Rev. E C Staley officiating. A wedding breakfast followed at the bride’s home. The couple plans to reside on a Stromsburg area farm after a honeymoon trip.
Dorcas Society sponsors a mission festival at Swede Home Church on Friday with a program and lunch. Confirmation and evening Communion services set for Sunday at 10 00. Numerous local visits and family gatherings noted across Stromsburg Osceola and Saronville with many names listed. A birthday party honoring Mrs Herman Jones was held Sunday afternoon with nearby families attending.
Results from Nebraska small grain trials on slopes show oats drilled across a slope produced 15.3 bushels per acre versus 9.7 when drilled up and down. Wheat on a 6 percent slope yielded 20.2 bushels across the slope and 13.3 bushels when drilled up and down. Polk County Farm Bureau was notified of the findings.

Miss Lorna Alfred of Chicago wed Dr. Charles Dunlap of Boston in a September ceremony at the University of Chicago chapel. Attendants wore lace gowns and bouquets. Harvard graduate Dunlap works with the Institute of Pathology in Boston. reception followed at the Hogness home in Chicago and the couple plan to reside there after a short honeymoon.
Miss Helen Swanson daughter of Mr and Mrs John Swanson of Escalon California and Ralph K Cohagan son of Mr and Mrs W F Cohagan of Hordville were married at Saron Lutheran Church in Escalon on Friday October 1 at 7 oclock The groom who spent his youth here before enlisting in the U S Navy will be stationed in San Pedro where the couple will reside
Mrs. Kenneth Spear visits relatives in Central City while Lucy Carlson returns from York hospital and Clair McCormick recovers at home. A large barn on C C McCormick estate burned Wednesday with unknown cause, leaving few belongings inside. Guests included numerous local families and a 29th wedding anniversary noted for George and Mrs Reth.
Government analysis indicates cattle and lamb prices will stay near current levels for several months. Hogs may fall a bit in late fall but remain at or above last year's. Strong meat demand and smaller hog supplies support hog feeding profits, with corn prices easing and feed grain improving.
Valley Church members held a Friday pound social reception in honor of Rev and Mrs W D Hamilton. Hamilton was elected pastor of Valley and Fairview Churches for the coming year. The event celebrated the couple’s 40th wedding anniversary on October 20 with a short program and refreshments including an angel food cake with 40 candles.
The Wesley Chapel Aid meeting postponed to Friday October 15. Woman's Foreign Missionary Society to meet October 14 with Mrs. Floyd West. Sunday School rally planned for next Sunday with program. Creamed chicken and biscuits served at the B. L. Burns sale Friday. Residents and visitors from Omaha, Grand Island, Shelby, Cohumbug, Stromsburg, Columbus, Madison, and Fullerton are listed with weekend visits and dinners. Engagements include several families visiting, traveling for harvest work, and club achievement day by Stull Corner Pig Club and Lone Maple Corn Club.
Miss Lou Leymaster spent the weekend visiting her sister Mrs. Ross Goethe and family at Polk.
