Governor Robert Crosby urged Nebraskans to support the Christmas Seal campaign to aid tuberculosis research, education, and early detection. He noted a drop in 1952 deaths and cases, and highlighted chest X rays as key to early treatment. The drive runs through Christmas statewide.
The Rev John M Herrmann home three blocks south of the post office corner was purchased by Orval Likenhorst. The Eikenhorsts will offer their home a block north of the hospital for sale and will occupy their new residence as soon as they dispose of their present home.
Mr and Mrs Glen Richards announce the engagement of their daughter Jean to Set. first class Willis Harris son of Mrs Susan Harris of Delta Ia No definite wedding date has been set.
The town bids farewell to Rev. Swenson of the Lutheran Church who arrived quietly and earned respect by his kind words and encouragement. Residents reflect on the value of friends and gratitude, noting the pastor’s thoughtful manner and anticipation of missing him at Easter gatherings.
International implement dealer Alex Wobig, 54, was killed in a two car crash November 18 at a country road intersection 11 miles west and two miles south of Osceola. Reuben Anderson and his son Dennis were hospitalized with serious injuries but Dennis later improved. Wobig's body was taken to Newman Grove for funeral services.
Dr. W. F. Monson of Osceola will take part in the 67th Nebraska State Veterinary Medical Association annual meeting in Lincoln December 1 to 3. About 30 speakers will discuss hog diseases nutrition large animal surgery and cattle ailments with Governor Robert Crosby delivering the banquet address on December 2. The report also notes his recent attendance at the American Veterinary Medical Association convention in Toronto as a Nebraska delegate.
Dr and Mrs F A Schull from Ann Arbor Michigan were weekend visitors staying with Mr and Mrs M A Mills. Sr.
Three sale events are announced. On November 30 near Clarks George Topinka sells by Merrick and Noble auctioneers. On December 3 near Shelby Marven Hess sells farm equipment with Grubaugh Bros. auctioneers. On December 7 at Social Center Rest Home Walter Koehler conducts a closing out with Elton Berck machinery, hay, feed, and 20 cattle. Merrick and Ingalls auctioneers.
Newly chosen Polk County Farm Bureau officers are Arthur Ekstrom president Henry Galus vice president Mrs H P Tewell secretary and Walter Berck treasurer Delegates to the state convention, held November 23 to 25 in Lincoln, include H P Tewell, E A Hedlund, Oscar Imm and Elmer Gleim.
At three oclock on Wednesday afternoon November 18 the senior girls and sponsor Miss Betty Nichols were guests of the local PEO chapter at the home of Mrs L M Merrick. Fall flowers and yellow and white decorured the scene as Mrs M A Mills Sr and Mrs Homer Bollinger performed a puppet skit about Cottey College Nevada Mo. Co hosts were Mrs George Inness Miss Olive McBeth and Miss Vida Reckmever.
Polk County treasurer Carleton Anderson reports tax receipts for the first 13 days of January 1952 reached 113640, versus 397850 in the same period this year. Personal taxes are due in December. delinquent taxes incur 7 percent interest until paid. Personal taxes exclude car tax. automobile tax details will be mailed by the county assessor and payable with 1954 car tag purchases.
Osceola backfield and line players were honored at a banquet held in the Osceola school auditorium. Ray Watts acted as master of ceremonies as Coach Don Ewen of Hastings College spoke on football values and teamwork. About 150 people attended. meal served by St. Paul Lutheran Church ladies.
Mary Christian Lausen known as Mrs Ollie Christian died October 18 in Denmark after a stroke two weeks earlier. A Denmark burial followed. She had lived in Polk County and Mitchell before moving to San Rafael California and later visiting relatives in Denmark. Survived by her husband and four children Agnes Arthur and Marie of Brentwood California and Nellie of Denver.
Plans are completed for a church dinner at the Osceola school auditorium on Sunday December 6 from noon to 8 pm. The altar committee of St Vincen Church sponsors with Mrs. Clare Howe as general chairman. Mesdames Goerlinger and Meister oversee the dining room. fresh home made cakes and religious articles will be on display. Everyone is welcome.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly dinner and meeting at 7 00 p m in the Legion Building on Monday November 30 Final reports on Christmas activities will be presented and the event program announced All members urged to attend.
Relatives report the death of Leonard L. Shelmadine 81 at Macon Missouri on Saturday November 21. He was buried in Macon on Tuesday November 24. He was a former Osceola resident and brother to Mrs. David Timm of Stromsburg and the late F P Shermadine of Osceola, with another brother Fred L. living in Alliance Nebraska.
The Polk County Fair Board elected Albert Ryan to a third term as president at the annual meeting Tuesday night. Harold Klingman was chosen secretary treasurer succeeding Carlton Anderson who resigned. Directors who served last year were re elected.
Polk County recorded 1.44 inches of moisture last week with 0.81 inches of rain and 0.63 inch as wet snow. Ground remained unfrozen allowing absorption, aiding winter wheat. Roads were icy and travel slowed, but no major accidents occurred as storms moved east. Weather observer Harold Klingman of Osceola provided the figures.
Mrs. F A Anderson announces estate sale of her late husband’s personal farm machinery and miscellaneous items. The sale will be held December 9 four miles west and one mile south of Osceola with a large line of machinery. Full list to appear in the Record.
The 1954 March of Dimes aims to raise 75 million dollars next January, said Edith Heilman, Polk County Campaign Director. The goal, about 22 million more than last year, funds polio care, research, education, and a new prevention program including gamma globulin and vaccine trials. Representatives met in Des Moines November 16 17 to plan mobilization and a national Mother’s March on Polio expected to exceed 7.5 million participants.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce Activity Committee outlines three weeks of Christmas festivities for the territory and children including a free show treats for kids Santa visit and a turkey throwing event. Final dates to be decided at the next Monday meeting with plans announced in next week’s Record.
Mr and Mrs Will Dake celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday December 6. An open house for friends will be held at Fairview Hall from 2:00 to 5:00 PM.
Volunteer Delmar Augustin departed Thursday November 19 for Omaha to enter the armed forces induction program.
RIDE-A-WEES meets Wednesday evening December 2 with Mrs Ollie Schneider. PEO meets Wednesday December 2 for an evening with hostess Mrs W R Kepner. This will be the Christmas meeting.
Busy Belles Extension Club met at Mrs. Florian Goerlinger’s home Monday afternoon. Leaders Mrs. Paul Meister and Mrs. Glen Hendrickson demonstrated bound buttonholes and pockets. New member Mrs. Joseph Poe joined. four visitors attended.
The Legion Shuffle Board tournament finished its first round last Friday night. The Leaners defeated the Pilots two games to one and Firemen beat Crouses three to two in the playoff results.
