New Legislation Expands Veteran Pension Eligibility Rules
Nebraska veterans learn of liberalized 1945 rating schedule lowering pension barriers as to total non service connected benefits. At age 65 a veteran with any disability 10 percent or more can receive 72 dollars monthly if unable to secure work. Age 60 requires 50 percent combined disability. age 55 requires 60 percent. Mr and Mrs A B Bintz of CSceola were in a head on collision near Broken Bow on Friday night. Mrs Bintz sustained facial head cuts and shock and will be hospitalized about a week. Mr Bintz escaped serious injury and expects to go home when his car is repaired.

Cave-in At Anderson Farm Tied to Early Community Well
The Record recalls an Anderson farm hole north of town dating to early community days. Rufus Walker family history notes the hole existed in 1888 1891 and was used as the first dug well before being filled with logs rocks and dirt, later becoming a present well.

Carrie Schien daughter of Christopher and Margaret Schein was born in Baltimore Maryland October 25 1866 and died in 1949 at age 82. She moved to Polk County Nebraska in 1886 and married Frank E Smith October 23 1889. Survived by husband three daughters Maggie McBeth Mary Mickey Mattie M Brigham and John S Smith nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services at the house and Methodist church were led by Rev. W A Price with pallbearers listed and burial in Shelby cemetery.

Fire Rips Through Havens Village Business District
A stove overheated starting blaze destroyed a large part of Havens business district 24 miles west of Columbus early Saturday. The blacksmith shop owned by Jerome Hemmer, a feed store, Waltz theatre, and the Lukasiewicz grocery were wrecked. Firefighters from Silver Creek battled the flames but the winds whipped the fire. Builders residents lost all but their clothing and a few furnishings.

Myron and Emerald Johnson Die In Storm Cold Night
Myron Johnson aged 40 and his brother Emerald, 24, of Stromsburg died after their car ran out of gasoline near Osceola during a late storm. Their bodies were found Saturday morning near the Delbert Morris and Walter Nelson farms, death due to exhaustion and exposure. A search by local residents and authorities followed the missing car reported Friday afternoon.

About 250 people gathered at the Osceola high school auditorium for a banquet marking the 45th anniversary of St. Paul’s Lutheran congregation. The Luther League directed the program Let There Be Light with decor, corsages, and group singing. A large donation was given to the Building Improvement Fund.

Rural notes report Mr and Mrs Neal Hasselbalch returned Friday from a several days visit to Wyoming and Denver Colorado. District 18 had no school Wednesday afternoon due to illness among teachers. Birth day Club was hosted by Mrs Carl Benda Thursday afternoon. The Bruckners held a public sale Thursday and moved furniture to Columbus Saturday to establish a new home.
