An estimated 29000 dollars of property burned in the Stockham grain elevator fire early Monday, destroying about 16000 bushels of grain. The cause is undetermined though the owner suspects spontaneous combustion. Fire found while operator was at dinner.

The public sale of D. E. Buchholz will be held at the Osceola area farm four miles north and half a mile east on Monday November 20 at 1 00 p m. The sale lists turkey raising equipment and other items including a tractor farming gear a truck hogs and cattle. Dick Merrick acts as auctioneer with Byers and Pierce as clerks. The Altar Society of St Vincent Church will provide a noonday meal with proceeds to the School Band Uniform Fund.
County treasurer Carleton Anderson says personal taxes are arriving quickly with a record $11,573.24 paid on November 1. The following two days saw about $10,000, then about half that for nine working days. Assessments mention personal property down while Carnassessments rise by about a half million dollars. Taxpayers are urged to pay before December 1 to avoid interest penalties and benefit from early payment.
The Band Magazine Drive starts Nov 20 with a truck on the block north of the schoolhouse. Volunteers will unload magazines 2:30 to 4:00 pm. Fund drives include a Nov 29 benefit show at the local theater with 9c 35c and 45c tickets. Proceeds go to the Uniform Fund.
Lyell Bremser, famed Nebraska University football broadcaster, will headline the Osceola Chamber of Commerce annual banquet held in the school auditorium next Monday night November 20. The event includes a slideshow of this year’s Kansas NU game and honors the football squad as guests.
A republished 1884 photograph shows the conveyance for Chas A. Hope and Ed Dolan headed to a Kansas land drawing. Mrs. Floyd West, Wesley Chapel correspondent, notes Hope was her uncle. The building on the left later housed Elsie Cerny’s Beauty Shop. the east building burned after the photo was taken.
Miss Louella Crew is remembered as a public servant and teacher who loved helping others. The service at Lincoln included a tribute by Rev Merlin Dana, praising her spiritual strength and care for students and community. Interment followed in Weeping Water cemetery.
The Christian Rural Overseas Program continues to receive donations with $1127.60 reported in Polk County. Some areas have not yet reported, but cash gifts may be sent to Warren E. Johnson, CROP treasurer, at Stromsburg Bank.

The Osceola Chamber of Commerce sponsors a pancake feed at the school auditorium Friday evening December 1 starting 6 30 pm to raise funds for the School Band Uniform Fund. Adult tickets 65 cents junior tickets 25 cents with a free 3 pound sack of pancake flour per adult ticket. Free transportation to the building available and taxi service may be arranged by calling the school house after 6 15 pm.
The Goldenrod Conference meeting at Polk on Tuesday November 14 announced the All-Conference football team. Osceola Bulldogs placed three on the lineup with four honorable mentions while several other players from Stromsburg Genoa Polk Osceola Clarks contributed to the selections. Silver Creek won readmission to the conference and festival sites were set at Osceola for Band and Stromsburg for Dramatic events.
A Polk County canvass shows higher turnout than expected with early voting dominant. Elsie Cole defeats Wesley A. Koehler for County Assessor. Wilard Cornell over Harold Taddiken for Sheriff. Guildford Bryan over Arthur Nelson for Commissioner First District. other contests include multiple unopposed races and referenda results.
William Byers infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Byers has been staying with his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Don Byers for the past week while his mother recovers from surgery at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings. Timothy Byers is with their grandparents in Red Cloud.
Reports on the current corn crop show fields yielding 50 to 65 bushels per acre. Stores display Christmas toy lines and prep for crowded season upcoming. A Pancake Feed December 1 at the School auditorium benefits the Band Uniform Fund with tickets sold locally. A hunting dog found northwest of Osceola follows a party to Silver Creek. Albert Ryan plans to remodel the post office building into two apartments upstairs.
