Two letters to the Record readers recount moves births and travels. The 1943 Albuquerque note sends $3 and mentions fall rain and hospital election results. The 1953 Schenectady letter describes a rain visit and plans for hunting brace removal and a new home address.
The 1953 annual meeting of the Polk County Agricultural Society will be held in the court house in Osceola on Thursday November 12 at 8 00 p m. Officers for the coming year and the board of directors will be elected. Eligible voters are season ticket holders for the 1953 county fair. Albert Ryan has served as president for two years. Carleton Anderson is secretary treasurer after Victor Slerup resigned as secretary.
Osceola Bulldogs end 1953 football with a 26-6 win over Silver Creek to cap an eight game schedule at five victories and three defeats. They beat St Paul Shelton Polk Genoa and Silver Creek, lost to Stromsburg Clarks and David City, and faced Clarks as conference champs with a 33-0 defeat.
The Wayland Church ladies announce their annual church supper on Thursday evening November 5 at the church in the county’s southeast. Serving starts at 6 30 p m and continues until finished. Adults pay 1 00 and children under 12 pay 50 cents. County residents are invited for chicken supper and a good time.

Polk County attorney Philip Nyberg says bonds for a Polk County Hospital are being prepared for state approval. After bonds are issued to Dr. C. W. Jeffrey and an escrow agreement is set, a board of hospital trustees can be appointed. Planning, location, and construction will follow legal steps, with construction possible next spring and a year or more to complete.
County commissioners announce the county farm now leased by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Koehler will be rented to new operators soon. Mrs. Koehler will run Rest Manor in Osceola while Mr. Koehler cannot operate the farm. The panel seeks operators for the rest home and farm, noting they may rent separately or together. Interested parties should contact the commissioners. the group meets at the court house every Tuesday.
Busy Belles Extension Club met on Wednesday October 28 at Mrs Laurence Meister home. President Mrs Fred Ilusuk presided as members named a favorite food for roll call with eight visitors present. New officers for next year include Clem Marak president Fred Husak vice president and Clarence VanQostrand secretary treasurer.
Polk County taxpayers received notices from the county treasurer naming amounts due and payment deadlines. Personal taxes are due by November. delinquent December 1 accrues seven percent interest. Real estate taxes may be paid with personal taxes but aren’t due yet. About 3,700 notices mailed. extra staff hired to assist during tax period. Carleton Anderson urged bringing tax cards for quick account lookup. checks should include the card for proper credit.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Rasp of near Gresham called on Mr and Mrs N S Abolt Monday, sharing a social call and conversation at their home.
Lincoln Nebras kans resident under 16 does not need a hunting permit or migratory bird stamp to hunt waterfowl. Non residents must purchase non resident permits regardless of age. A land owner may post land as he wishes and still hunt. Rabbits and squirrels may be hunted with rifles but not game birds. A shotgun is loaded if a shell is in the mechanism. All state lakes are open except Willow and Walgren. It is legal to shoot from public roads. Conservation officers have state police powers to arrest and serve writs when violations occur.
Robert H. McBeth, returning to California after a Polk county visit, was critically injured when his car went out of control and rolled over a 20 foot embankment near Oxford Nebraska last Saturday. One passenger was killed and two others critically hurt. McBeth remains unconscious in Oxford hospital.
The city launches widening of the street west of the post office to ease bottlenecks and accidents. The block from the post office corner to the lumber yard corner will be expanded to create two traffic lanes and allow parking on one side.
Mr and Mrs Harley Warner traveled five days to Kansas and Oklahoma. In Wichita they reported two inches of rain and good looking wheat in Oklahoma as they returned home.
The wildcat test north of Shelby was abandoned last week after reaching granite, ending practical drilling. The site drew many visitors as leases spurred interest, but promoters gave no clear plan for further tests in the area.
124 children attended a Halloween party at the legion rooms. Decor included pumpkins witches and skeletons as youths and younger participants were masked in costumes. Judges awarded prizes to Kathy McVeigh Ricky Braithwait Kathy Schneider Suzie Larson Larry Zentz and Cleo Coleman with candy for all attendees.
Former Osceola residents now in southern California held their fifth annual Osceola Picnic at South Park in Los Angeles on October 18. A smaller crowd enjoyed lunch, prizes, and socializing, with Sarah Campbell re elected president and Marion George secretary for the coming year.

St Andrew Altar Society hosts public card party Sunday at 8 PM in parish hall. St Andrew Holy Name Society meets Monday at 8 PM with Allen Zelasner hosting. Wednesday St Vincent Altar Society meets at 8 PM with officer elections. men invited for social hour.
Fifteen Polk County students including three from Osceola are among 645 enrolled at Nebraska Wesleyan University for 1953 54. Osceola names include Sharon Berck William Bryan and LaVern Richards. Wesleyan welcomes students from 18 states and four foreign countries with enrollment about unchanged from last year.
Polk 4 H members toured Grand Island in a station wagon visiting fire, police, Coca Cola plant, Farment Foods, radio station KMMJ and the Grand Island Independent to learn how news is produced. Participants included Avis Waller and others with club leaders Mrs. Irvin Anderson and Mrs. Lloyd Hahn.
Government observer Harold Klingman notes a record dry October with only three measurable rain events. The month totals .44 inches versus the normal two, while temperatures ran well above average with several days in the 80s and 90s and five freezing or below at month end.
Mrs. Dewey Sigler a District 49 teacher led thirteen pupils and fifteen parents on a Lincoln tour Wednesday October 28 visiting the State Capitol Morrill Hall KFOR TV station Lincoln City Police and Fire Department and Miller Paine Candy Kitchen.
