In a measured note the NSN editor condemns a Friday street assault in Stromsburg where Osceola women were showered with eggs and water bags by youths. The piece urges accountability and insists an apology to the women is overdue.
Polk County pays 1 274 social security beneficiaries about 1 200 000 dollars yearly. Retired workers number 709 and receive 768 000 dollars while 716 beneficiaries are 72 or older and receive a substantial share. The county also includes 338 aged 65 to 71 and 110 aged 60 to 64 among survivors and dependents.
First Division Marine HM2 Hospitalman Tom Morgan was wounded in action in Vietnam with his platoon 18 miles southwest of DeNaugh on May 11. He was awarded the Purple Heart. before service he worked at Annie Jeffrey Hospital for several years.
Airman Apprentice Edward J. Gavlik USN son of Mrs Stasia Poprocki Silver Creek Nebraska sailed aboard USS Forrestal returning to Norfolk after a nine month Sixth Fleet deployment in the Mediterranean. Army Private First Class Thomas R Kohl 19 son of Mr and Mrs John F Kohl Clark Nebraska assigned to the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam as a rifleman April 19.
Mrs Rex Peterson of Shelby dies after long illness at Jeffrey Hospital. Funeral services are set for 2 PM Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Shelby.
Osceola resident Chris Dahmke receives the Ak-Sar-Ben Good Neighbor Citation for ten years of Lions Club service. Other Nebraska honorees include Harold Beck, Leslie Beck of Clarks and Helen Fusby of Stromsburg, plus Rodney Johnson from Polk, a Viet Nam serviceman.
Osceola baseball earned its second league win, 11 to 4 over St Edward on Sunday. St Edward took an early four runs as Osceola answered with 11. Bob Hegi hit a three RBI homer in the third with two on. Next week Osceola hosts Silver Creek at 8 15 p.m.
Clerk Dale Frizzell directs destruction of ballots from the November General Election. On May 15, ballots are loaded into a truck and burned at the city dump under supervision of Bill Wales and Hiding Dahlin, reducing them to charred remnants.
Administrative Board votes May 17 to install an air conditioning system in the Osceola United Methodist Church sanctuary. Work to start soon and be completed before hot weather. Also notes local events: Museum hours May 29 and June 1, Alumni Banquet May 30, Memorial Day Service, and sports schedules at the Country Club and local teams. Obituary mentions Mrs. Linda Leaders dies at 88 in Omaha. Bridal shower honors Miss Sandra Wasmund ahead of June wedding.
Each auxiliary member should furnish 10 sprays of real or artificial flowers and cedar for Memorial Day decorations. Leaves at President Mrs. Ben Schmoker's home by the evening of May 29. Also today is the deadline to bring Hobby and Art Show displays for Old Times Day at Polk-Butler Insurance building. someone will be on hand to receive items.
1969 OHS honor students Valedictorian Jack Cerny and Salutatorian Ken Monson addressed the graduating class at Thursday commencement. Pre nuptial courtesies for Dianne Lux ahead of June 21 wedding to Gary Reznicek noted. showers for the bride elect were held May 17 and 18. Irah Jane Burke of Stromsburg died May 17 aged 88. services in Stromsburg. May 22 diplomas were awarded to 32 seniors by Eugene Pierup's Board of Education President.
Columbus announces the engagement of Joyce Rupp to R Dennis Kirby of Silver Creek. Joyce Rupp, Columbus High School and C E School of Commerce Omaha graduate, works as a secretary in Columbus. Kirby, Silver Creek High School graduate, is in farming and a September 13 wedding in Columbus is planned.
Odd bits describe a week full of school activities alumni banquet Memorial Day Old Times Day and daily projects. It urges appreciation for organizers welcomes out of town visitors and hopes they enjoy the city and surrounding area while noting modern times and moon exploration.
W. W. Norton 68 longtime Osceola attorney and civic leader died unexpectedly May 23 at Methodist Hospital Omaha. Funeral services were held May 26 at Osceola United Methodist Church with interment in Osceola Cemetery. A complete obituary appears elsewhere.
The 64th annual Spring Commencement at Kearney State College will be held at 10 a.m. May 29. Osceola candidates include Barry Schmoker and Sylvia Perry with education degrees, Arlette Johnson, Ronald Buffington, and others from Axtell and Clarks, with Margaret Banks graduating Cum Laude.
