Government guidance on conserving acreage allows flexible crop use on conserved land. Small grains seeded alone cannot be harvested for grain, hay, or silage. Sudan grass and millet for pasture hay or silage qualify. Nurse crop small grains may be cut green for hay or silage by a state established date, announced by counties in advance. Feed Grain certificates issued by local ASC offices for light draft or cash. must be endorsed and presented to ASC.

District Track Meet Highlights and State Qualifiers
Larry Wieseman placed second in both the 100 and 220 yard dashes at the district meet on Friday May 12 to earn spots in the State Track Meet in Lincoln May 19 and 20. Others placing were Roger Morris, Bob McCormick, and Bob Diges with Morris third in shot put and fifth in discus, Diges fifth in low hurdles, and McCormick fifth in the mile. Polk county residents purchased $58,369 of Series E and H savings bonds in April per A. E. Bodine, county bond chairman. The four month total reached $343,919, 56.8 percent of the 1961 quota. Statewide sales rose 5 percent in April to $7,044,419 with gains in February and March. Nebraska four-month sales totaled $38,767,800 or 40.2 percent of its goal.

Grandson of W. J. Herrmanns Receives Army Commission
Lt. William C. Herrmann of Bennington Vermont graduated from Regular Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning Georgia on May 2. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Melvin Herrmann and grandson of Mr and Mrs W J Herrmann of Osceola. His mother wife and children attended the exercises in Georgia. He enlisted seven years ago in the Vermont Army National Guard and rose through the ranks. He attended the advanced noncommissioned officers course at Fort Knox in 1958 and prepared himself with Army extension courses for OCS. His father Melvin Herrmann is the son of W J Herrmann and formerly lived in the area and graduated from Osceola High School.

The Story of the Late Pete Monson and Wife
Mr and Mrs Pete Monson wed in spring 1869 at Stockholm Sweden and sailed to the United States in May. After six weeks at sea they traveled via Gulf St Lawrence to Quebec and Chicago where they briefly worked. They moved to Minneapolis then to Litchfield Minnesota to homestead finding none available. Mr Monson helped build the Great Northern railroad and his wife cooked for the workers as they endured the trek. The men really liked doughnuts.

Scholarship winners race to honors in 1961 class
John Cederberg valedictorian edged Carolyn Swanson salutatorian by a small fraction in a close contest for scholarships. John will receive a Regents Scholarship to Luther College this fall while Carolyn attends Midland College. Additional awards went to Barbara Oberg at Kearney State Teachers College and Marian Inness at Nebraska Wesleyan. Bob Dinges and Barbara Oberg were named Regents alternates. Dinges will study at the University of Wyoming in Laramie next fall.
