Veterans memorial observances highlight the silent majority and gratitude for those who wore the blue. Polk County Fair exhibits state farm display and local school events, with student awards, plays, and staff activities noted for the coming season.
The Osceola Auditorium hosts a 1916 high school graduation with Invocations Salutations and presentations. Rev T J Asmus, J W Fillman, Lara Bittner, Evelyn Price lead vocal solos and a piano selection. Tickets go on sale May 22 at G T Rays Drug Store. reserved seats 25 cents.
A historical notice lists church events: sermon to graduates Sunday evening May 20 at the M E church with Rev Wurst, songs and invocations, then May 19 Friday events by Canid Al Vassar, and a Primary Room program Monday May 22 at 2 PM followed by an operetta Tuesday evening May 22.
Notice states the garbage dump on the J. P. Berck place, just west of the city, will close after May 1. No garbage may be dumped after that date.
At Gettysburg the National cemetery records show New York troops bore a large share of losses with over one third of identified dead and wounded. Notable officers wounded included Sickles, Weed, Barlow, Graham, Webb, and Warren, among nine New York brigade and battery commanders killed.
Mrs Annie Clobes of Stella Neb visited Osceola Monday staying with Mr and Mrs M A Hart son. She has been visiting Ed and Adolph Clobes at Shelby and will go there for a week before returning home. Dr D J Smith traveled to Omaha on professional business with Mr and Mrs Joe Taylor of Stromsburg and will then visit Des Moines for several days. Every day a bargain day at our store. A. E. Stoner advertises for buyers with money to invest in a fine quarter section of land. Interested parties should call at the East side State Street four blocks from the square in Osceola to get particulars.
