Reports from road committees and other groups highlighted a Friday meeting in Ryan's barber shop area. Albert Ryan led bids for Meridian highway involvement and midsummer events while plans for peddler permits and a fourth of July program were set.
Polk county will send a group to the Lincoln agricultural college for the annual boys and girls club week commencing June second. The list includes Johnnie Ingalls Harold Ingalls Harold Johnson Helen Ramsey Naomi Tockey Claude Stromsburg Gladys Swanson Oscar Strand Harold Adams Willie Burritt Phillip Johnson Raymond Wagner Chester Adams aided by several sponsors and chaperones including the county agent and Mrs Seth Piper of Polk.
Public sale of W. O. Johnson Co. stock and fixtures listed by trustee Frank H. Anderson will occur next Tuesday. Assets include merchandise 14 668 57, bills receivable 2 300 18, accounts receivable 2 684 61, fixtures 15 000 00. Merchandise and fixtures may be sold intact by department or by parcel. A large turnout is expected as buyers have already inspected the stock.
The Senior class play Anne Whats Her Name at the high school auditorium last Thursday drew a record attendance. Cast members such as Miss Mil dred Olson Miss Meryl Van Vlack and Miss Mae Clark earned standout notices for strong performances with supporting solos and a lively specialty segment by the high school orchestra.
The Wesley Chapel ladies sponsor a sewing club for girls led by Mrs. Louie Johnson. Members include Helen Johnson Naomi Richard Martha Huggler Arlene Johnston and Nadine Richmond forming the Wesley Busy Bees.
A plan led by A J Dunlap of the American College of Business aims to offer nine months of home study at Osceola with a three month finishing course in Omaha to cut costs for Polk County youths. The program would use local teachers and equipment with Omaha's college standards, and guarantee placement or money back. Supt Andrews and school board members endorse it as handling 75 students without added expense or staff, with the Community Club approving further study.
Work began Monday on the M. E. Church upgrading the roof with new shingles under the spring renovation program. Frank Chauner led the re-roofing project. Additional tasks include painting the main auditorium and adjoining rooms, with basement painting completed last week, boosting the church’s appearance and the city.
The Little Ten from Homestead A reorganization meeting on April 9 drew seven girls. Mrs Elsie Bond was elected leader with Alice Martin Fern Martin Ruth Funk Margaret Thomas Mildred Bond and Lois Burgess named members. The Busy Bees of Wayland elected Mrs O M Thomas as leader with Helen Law Neva Spalding Thelma Lot Constance Gulbrandsen Beth Hawley Mildred Thomas and Pauline Lee as members.
The Stromsburg Commencement programs feature Reverend Ellis Ekloff delivering the baccalaureate sermon on The Keys to the Future at the M E Church followed by an address by Professor H E Bradford titled The Magic Touch. Diplomas will be presented by Henry Hubbert with notes on the Class of 1924 including Marvin Fredrickson Ray mond Fredrickson and many others among the graduates.
The Stromsburg Senior class staged Booth Tarkingtons Tweedles for two shows at the Rialto drawing large crowds and broad acclaim. Under Miss Mielenz and Hutchinson the three act play featured a cast including Faye Hubbert Edna Swan LoRena Smith Joynt Marjorie Anderson Wallace Banta Eric Olson Sahlen Raymond Fredrickson and others delivering romance and humor suited for school use.
Miss Ethel Blake reports to the Record that 440 books were reconditioned this spring with bindings renewed and covers mended. The work cost 20 cents per book, totaling nearly one fifth of the library appropriation. She cautions that careful use will extend their life, while rough handling or improper use will quickly deteriorate them.
Polk County representatives attended a preliminary meeting to organize a state egg grading and marketing bureau. Mrs. Floyd West was chosen as district delegate with Mrs. Robert McBeth as alternate. The group, backed by the Farm Bureau and state extension service, aims to promote cooperative grading and marketing of eggs for producers' benefit.
Fire department responded to a 11 o clock alarm at the W. E. Snider residence but Mrs Snider and her daughter Gladys had the blaze under control before firefighters reached the scene. A gasoline stove leak caused the incident. no explosion or serious damage occurred.
The Junior-Senior banquet was held last Thursday in the Baptist church parlors with thirty six attendees. A six course dinner was provided by the Sophomore girls. Baccalaureate services were held Sunday at the Baptist church with Rev. Peterson delivering the address and several musical numbers. Commencement will be at the Methodist church Friday night.
The Wahoo Lutheran men's chorus performed Monday evening at the Lutheran church in Osceola. A large crowd attended despite no publicity for the engagement.
Polk county plans for the June 17 farmers picnic at Buckley Park Stromsburg advance with County Agent W B Adair confirming. C H Withey of the Farmers Union Livestock Commission Omaha will speak and Osceola American Legion double quartet plus one or two bands are slated to perform.
In sunny Hawaii the Juniors and Seniors met for a farewell banquet with hula, music, and a Hawaii themed program. Ruth Brown read a prophesy for the seniors, Mildred Olson read a class poem, and speakers offered best wishes for the next year. The event closed with a chorus and a "Home Again" toast by Luella Lovell.
Town and county notes report John Kosh and Mrs. Kosh to Columbus for treatment with possible surgery, ongoing home remodeling by Nat Blevins, and visits to John Seberger in a Columbus hospital. A thunderstorm damaged Jake Schnedker’s chimney. social events include Miss Adam Birth and Ross Oestreicher’s upcoming marriage. Death of Gus Wolpert in an Illinois car crash. Pereorsz travel notices and church pageants noted. May festival, school play, and Mothers Day observances highlighted.
An Osceola Woman's Club open meeting at the M E church basement featured a 6:30 dinner with blue and gold decor. The program included music by the division quartet and chorus, a humorous playlet, and a talk by Wm Heitzman on United States world power with a call for clean government.
The year’s food and nutrition work advances with the last meeting in the Courty Agent's office. Women collected recipes for the county recipe book and listed attendees from multiple clubs including Stoner, Green's Chapel, South Shelby, Pleasant Corners, Swede Home, Faithful Workers, Polk Ideal, Busy Dozen, Extension, Maple Leaf, and Wesley Chaps in Osceola.
Attendance at the Parent-Teachers meeting heard plans to sponsor prizes for scholars reading books over the summer. Funds will allow a prize in each grade to encourage equal competition, with a discussion on athletics, supervision, and health topics shaping next year’s program.
County Superintendent I D Huston announces teacher examinations to be held in Osceola on Friday May 23 and Saturday May 24. Exams follow the regular two day course and many graduates are expected to take part this year.
The Stromsburg Community Service Association hosted its semi annual dinner with over a hundred attendees. Prof Barbour from the state university spoke with an illustrated geology lecture, followed by harp music by Miss Marjorie Shannefelt and a reading by Miss Leona Smith. Luther College men’s quartet from Wahoo drew applause. A C Morrill arranged the program. M E church ladies served the dinner. overall a successful event.
The Osceola High School commencement program will fill City Auditorium tonight with Supt. M. C. Lesler of Lincoln City Schools as the principal speaker. Graduates include William Olson and Meryle Van Vlack among a long list of seniors and near graduates with numerous names read aloud during the ceremony.
