A local journalist reflects on a busy May as she and Dick attend numerous school board and city council meetings across towns. Graduation night looms. she seeks ideas on the high school building and gathers cost data for the grade school to inform decisions. The couple emphasizes action for the sake of the youth.
The National Farmers Organization announces a nationwide marketing vacation advising members to stop selling hogs and corn due to low prices. Oren Lee Staley says hogs bring 15 to 16 cents per pound while consumer pork price remains high. The halt begins 8:00 a.m. Monday May 3 with county leaders informed in meetings across hog and corn regions. Non members are asked to join to support the effort. In memory gift article notes a donation to Samarian Home for grounds beautification. Locals report Oscar Jones among 50 relatives at Melvin Nelson home in Lincoln.
Donald A Buller started as Administrator of Annie Jeffrey Hospital on Monday May 3 in Osceola. He brings seven years of experience from Henderson Hospital and Nursing Home. Mrs Buller Shirley and children Teresa Libby and Karen will stay in Henderson until school breaks. The family has not yet found housing.
The 11th annual Nebraska Short horn Ass'n Progress Show will be held May 15 at Platte County Agricultural Park in Columbus. Nearly $500 in cash awards, warranties and trophies will be given in steer, market heifer, registered heifer and showmanship classes. Dr N W Kruse Genoa will award the Premier Exhibitor trophy. Dave Williams UNL will judge showmanship. Joe Watson extension agent West Point will place steer and heifer classes. Entry blanks available from local FFA instructors, county agents, or Dr N W Kruse, Genoa Nebr 68640.
Carla Johnson, Stromsburg High School senior, received the Polk County Extension Club Scholarship at a Spring Tea on May 3. Alternate was Peggy Trout of Shelby who will study physical therapy at the University of Nebraska. The event featured a fashion show, candlelit serving table, and a cake prize.
Mer ton Flodman, committee chairman, announced Old Times Day dates for May 29 and 30 at the Osceola Chamber of Commerce meeting. LeRoy Flink introduced as new City Cafe owner and outlined business plans. The group approved dues to the Highways 81 and 92 Associations, discussed tree planting at Ryan Hill with Bob Mills, and planned a meeting with the City Council on baseball diamond funding.
Andrew and Michelle Kresha of Polk County earned trips to the 1971 District Contest at Midland College Fremont after winning the county senior division on April 19. Michelle spoke on 4-H A Great Group and Andrew on What the 4-H Pledge Means.
At the Osceola Women’s Bowling Association annual banquet on Monday May 3 at Ryan Hill Country Club Mary Lou Stallings was elected president. Officers include Lorraine Wieseman vice president Sheila Moore secretary Brenda Dunn treasurer and Elsie Spalding Sgt at arms. Carol Sagehorn posted a 241 high game and Lonnie Kobra a 623 high series. Team honors were awarded to the Flo Guides Smith’s Wheathearts and Blue Flames.
Anita Peterson, daughter of the Milton Petersons, was among nine Midland Lutheran College coeds tapped into the Cardinal Key honor on Wednesday. The 19 scholars were chosen for GPA above 3.0 and active campus involvement with Anita a junior. The tapping occurred at a Wednesday reception with Fremont high school seniors and area alumni present.
Miss Maud Anderson retired from Annie Jeffrey Hospital after 15 years as nurse aide. She cared for over 1000 babies in the hospital Nursery and also did regular nurse aide work. A staff gift and door prizes from local businesses concluded the event hosted by 129 staff and Stromsburg High School musicians.
The Centenary Book Committee will meet at 8 p.m. on Tuesday May 11 in City Hall. Members should submit research promptly. The picture caption committee has met five times and is almost half done. The Centennial Committee found two pioneer stories in an old family Bible and asks others to share material with Bernie Gissler or the Record Office.
Former Polk County residents Mr. and Mrs. G P Luft marked their 66th wedding anniversary. Married April 26 1905 in Columbus they lived in Polk County before moving to Nance County over 40 years ago and have since farmed near Ful lerton. They have five sons three daughters 29 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.
Everette Smith named Chief of Osceola Volunteer Firemen with Jim Lewis as 1st Assistant and Don Anderson as 2nd Assistant. Harlan Rowan named 3rd Assistant. Lee Draeger elected President, Norman Hofbauer Vice President, Charles Roberts Secretary-Treasurer.
OHS juniors and seniors held the Tulip Time prom on May 1 in Holland inspired by a Dutch landscape with tulips windmills bridges and goldfish ponds. The grand march featured arches of blue and gold while Freshmen in Dutch outfits sang Tiptoe Through The Tulips. Steve Tenniges as junior class president welcomed guests and Larry Neujahr spoke for the seniors. Karen Johnson read the class will and Dick Wyman gave the prophecy. Al Stroup spoke as coach and teacher.
Patrick and Wolfe headline a Nebraska State Fair Appaloosa show where Howdy's Prince Plaudit, owned by Howard Hansen Jr. of Blair, claimed grand champion in the aged stallion class at Lincoln. Amigo Patrick took second in Class II 1969 stallions and Mighty Wolfe placed fourth in aged geldings. The event, April 23-24, also ran with the NU Intercollegiate Championship Rodeo and drew 200 plus entries. In a separate note, a May 7 concert by grades 1-4 at the high school gym offers free admission and a varied program titled Happiness Is.
Osceola School Board met May 3 to set year end dates including May 24 last day of classes May 14 seniors last day May 26 report cards and May 25 Recognition Night. No actions taken on teacher hires but instrument purchases approved for the band.
Anita Hollister, 68, died early Tuesday in Annie Jeffrey Hospital after months of ill health. Funeral services are set for Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. She had been Green's Chapel correspondent for this newspaper for several years, retiring last year. She is survived by two sisters Mrs. Lester Graves and Mrs. Maud Larsen of Kit Carson Colorado.
Jane Cromwell Strong, the 1970 University of Nebraska Rodeo Queen, attended the Lincoln event the weekend of April 24 for the Inter-Collegiate Rodeo. She assisted in horsemanship, led the parade with Smoky, and passed the crown to Miss Chris Ferguson of Ord. The Nebraska Rodeo Association sponsors the event. Jane and Gary reside in Stromsburg and she works at First National Bank in Osceola.
Ak-Sar-Ben and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers will honor Nebraska Pioneer Farm families owned by the same household for 100 years or more. The program has recognized 577 farms and will present engraved walnut plaques and gate posts plus a framed citation. Nominations are due by June 1 to county fair boards.
