The Cornhusker League opener for Osceola takes place this Sunday May 9 at York. Weather delayed practice but the squad has light workouts and heavy sessions planned, with many positions unsettled until game day. Bud Bles sie joins as pitcher boosting Osceola’s prospects and steadies younger players.
Numerous families and relatives visited and hosted gatherings across Bellwood Shelby and surrounding towns. The list includes the Gabels in Joe Mick’s Bellwood home, Brazees in Shelby, Swansons with the Joneses, Gondringers with the Andersons in Hastings, and other local social calls in Papillion Fullerton Columbus and Mon day.
Osceola Project Club met on April 20 at Nelle Wisely residence. Mrs. G R Peterson presented an engaging Guide to Good Eating session for members.
The offices of Doctors C R and R O Peterson will be closed next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday as they attend the state dental convention in Omaha.
Omaha pitcher Bud Blessie, long a top starter in the region, moves to Osceola to live and work at The Record. A Creighton graduate and former Skip Pahang student, Blessie served four years in the armed forces and returned last year to freelance in Nebraska cities. He has faced leading teams and won his share in solid baseball during his career.
Committees of Wm. Wolfe Post 92 of the American Legion organize two baseball squads to sponsor a Junior team and a Midget team for players under fifteen. The Junior squad, coached by Alton Wilhelm, features holdover players from last year with an 11-4-0 record. Tryouts are planned before school ends on Saturdays, with district attachment to Osceola to be decided at a May 28 Legion State Athletic Board meeting.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson and daughters and August John son visited with Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Johnson and DeVon on Tuesday evening. Various neighbors and relatives including Mrs. Harold Cramer and children, Pastor and Mrs. A. E. Franzen and children attended gatherings. Notable events include baptisms and birthday celebrations for Judy and Rodney with many local families hosting.
Osceola seeks alumni and former teachers for a May 28 1948 banquet and prom at the Osceola High School Auditorium at seven o clock. The event aims to start an annual affair with an orchestra planned and tickets about 1.75 dollars. Please respond by May 12 with attendance plans.
The Osceola FFA held its first Parent Son Banquet in the Methodist church basement last Friday. Vocational instructor Donald E. Monson led the group, and H. W. Deems spoke on FFA aims with photos of members’ projects. Guests toured the Vocational Education shop after the meal.
County extension notes urge earlier tillage of second year sweet clover to reduce moisture loss and crown damage. Subsurface tillage at shallow depth when crown buds begin can kill crowns, with plowing or duck footing offering similar results.
A $170 audience attended the annual senior class play in the high school auditorium last Thursday night. The mellordrama Dirty Work At The Crossroads drew laughs and applause as Margery Schneider played Nellie Lovelace and James Norton portrayed Adan Oakhart. Supporting roles by Gloria Ann Jones, Logan Vaniloosen, Ronald Loseke, and others were praised, with Jean Kennedy earning high marks for her part. A barber shop quartet performed between acts.
Farmers and ranchers are urged to intensify spring efforts against brucellosis in cattle to curb rising losses in meat and milk and protect human health. The American Foundation for Animal Health cites testing, reactor disposal, sanitation, herd management, and calfhood vaccination as key measures requiring veterinary and owner cooperation nationwide.

District No. 18 A Fellers of Genoa was a Saturday guest in the Louis Schmidt home. Mr and Mrs Louis Scow and family near Lone Star were Friday evening callers in the John Micek home. Harold Opplinger and family from Columbus visited Paul Hegi. Mrs Josie Benda and sons with Ed Lisko, Jake Micek, and Carl Benda and families joined a birthday party at the Butch Eschler home near Rising City. Emil Kubicek and Joe Kubicek of Shelby visited Hastings relatives on Sunday.
Mrs Hannah Johnson and family visited the Will Herrmann home Sunday afternoon in a brief social call.
Glenna VanHorn daughter of Mr and Mrs Victor VanHorn is among 21 new members of Pi Lambda Theta in the University of Nebraska Teachers college. The junior student with high scholastic standing was Osceola High School 1941 graduate and earned recommendation from a college faculty member.
Mr. and Mrs. Bud Deeds and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Anderson of Lincoln were weekend visitors of their parents here, Mrs. Flossie Deeds, Elton Berck and Mrs. Mable Anderson.
Mrs Walter Watts hosted a Sunday gathering on May 2 honoring her husband Walter Watts. Attendees included Mr Mrs Emma Boehema Helmet Summers Elmer Langenheim Roger Utica Mr Mrs Laren Althouse Surprise Roswill Johnson Lona Rae Stromsburg Mary Jane Pryor Eugene Nicolas Fred Huggler Charles Perry Harold Perry Rickey Shelby and Kent Perry. A buffet supper and a cake by Mrs Kent Perry accompanied gifts for Mr Watts.
Henry Strickland of Washington stayed with the Heitzman family en route to Lincoln and plans to move with his family mid June. Evelyn Zelazny of Clarks visited John Voichaske’s home. Carl Gaver was taken to St Francis Hospital in Osceola for treatment. George Gonner man and Leone Larson visited Heitzman and Carlson homes, with Larson staying with her son Walter’s family. Danial Snider of Oregon called on the Heitzman home. John Voichaske and Donna Rae visited Joe Karges. C R Carlson and Donna Rae spent Sunday in Colorado. Karleen and Maves visited Guss Carlson.
