Centennial plans nearly completed for Osceola event

Centennial plans for the Polk County Old Time’s Day in Osceola on June 1 are nearly finished. Harold Bausch will lead square dancing again and a dedication of a pioneer historical marker will take place. Lions Club and State Market Council Society sponsor the program with Marvin Kivett present.

Osceola to stage musical and tableaux night

Polk County Recreation Assn approves clubhouse bid

Polk County Recreation Association plans a clubhouse atop a hill overlooking the 95 acre recreation site with a 9 hole sand greens golf course. Wilson Construction Co. of David City won the bid after negotiating to come under the FHA 34000 limit, and Johnson Plumbing bid low on plumbing and utilities. The project requires a Friday May 5 meeting at Osceola City Hall to ratify bids.

Fire destroys King's Ballroom amid gusty winds

A spectacular fire driven by strong winds gutted King's Ballroom in Shelby early Sunday, threatening nearby homes. Owners Dale and Mrs King faced the blaze from a residence just north of the site as Shelby Osceola Gresham Rising City Columbus and David City fire crews battled the flames around 4:30 or 5 a.m. daylight saving time.
