About 650 students from 100 Nebraska high schools joined the University of Nebraska Fine Arts Festival in Lincoln for a two day coaching session. Local attendee Jeanne Inness played piano, Betsy Nash sang voice and Steven Sigler played organ. Jeanne auditioned for entry into the university music department next fall.

Joe Fernquist died in an El Paso hospital on April 16 1957 from complications after a leg amputation tied to diabetes. Born in Sweden about 75 years ago he lived in Polk County since youth and married Tillie Burke of Stromsburg in 1912. They farmed near Stromsburg Osceola and Dix before retiring to Hot Springs New Mexico. Survivors include two daughters two sons in law five granddaughters two grandsons and two great grandsons. Interment was in Hot Springs beside his wife. He was brother in law to Fred Burke and to Edd and Robert Burke.
Crouse Drug of Osceola earned a Rexall sponsored trophy, a 16th century bronze mortar and pestle replica from Deventer Netherlands, presented by company rep Jim Scott. Ed Schnasse of Wakefield and son of Mrs. E A Schnasse of Osceola were among the first trophy recipients.
