Retta Benson 78, of Silver Creek, died Monday evening at daughter Mildred Hansen’s home in Kearney after several weeks illness. Funeral services set for Friday at 2:00 PM at Silver Creek Methodist Church with burial in Silver Creek cemetery.
A Palm Sunday music service at Swede Home Church is scheduled for 7:30 to 9 p.m. on Sunday April 3. The program includes a preludes, scripture reading, choir pieces, vocal and instrumental solos and duets, a message by Pastor B G Johnson and a closing prayer.
Miss Phyllis Branting daughter of Mrs Fred Branting Osceola received her nursing cap in a candle lighting ceremony March 26 at First Lutheran Church Moline Illinois. She is a student at Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing and her cap marks over six months of class work and practice completing a milestone toward her profession.
At a Polk County Chapter NFIP meeting in the County District Court room on March 24 the executive committee was elected. Chairman Edith Heilman Osceola Vice-chairman Lillian Timm Osceola Treasurer Carleton Anderson Stromsburg Secretary Leo Larson Stromburg Member at Large Charles Peterson Polk. The group plans to appoint a key contact in each community for polio guidance and to coordinate vaccine plans if effective. Trial vaccination results are expected in early April.
Grand Island announces the engagement of Ann Launer daughter of Dr. and Mrs. L M Launer to Dana Bond son of Mr and Mrs Fred Bond of Osceola. They plan a September 3 wedding. Ann Launer, a University of Nebraska senior in Business Administration, leads Beta Gamma Sigma and is a Kappa Kappa Gamma member. Bond, a Navy veteran and Treasure Island electronics graduate, studies Electrical Engineering at Nebraska.
Warranty deeds show Wallace E Kinney transferring undivided half interest in southwest quarter of section 32 to J Frank Kinney. A reciprocal transfer by J Frank Kinney and wife to Wallace E Kinney covers the same parcel. City of Stromsburg deeds convey a 330 by 75 foot tract in Headstroms Second Addition to Ben A Berger and wife. Trustee deed transfers east 120 feet of Lot 4 and west 25 feet of Lot 5 in Town Company's First Addition to Harold Gordon.
Carleton Anderson treasurer of the Polk County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, receives a 15 year pin and a service certificate from the National Chapter. Basil O Connor signs the certificate. Anderson has served as treasurer since 1949 after acting as Osceola city director. He is the sole Nebraskan with 15 years of continuous service.
Bilma Johnston has set Wednesday April 6 for a household goods sale at the Ridge property in Osceola. Auctioneer Dick Merrick will lead, First National Bank will clerk, terms are cash. See the detailed ad elsewhere in this issue for the complete list of items.
PEO hosts a social calendar event on Wednesday April 6 with Mrs. George Inness as hostess.
Frank FE Ostrander Don ald G Nyberg of Polk and Wayne L Peterson of Stromsburg volunteered for service in the United States armed forces and were sent to Omaha for induction on March 1 at the induction station.
A reflective column muses on late night eating and dreams. It jokes about choosing sandwiches and desserts before bed and notes nightmares may stem from the stomach. The narrator concedes personal habits vary with age and appetite as they drift toward sleep and sweet dreams.
Rebekah lodges of District 14 including Polk Shelby David City Bellwood Osceola and Rising City held their annual district meeting at Rising City on Saturday March 26 in the school auditorium. Mrs Irvin Grossnicklaus of the local lodge was installed as District President for the coming year. Members from Osceola attended.
Polk County Deputy Assessor Roy E. Horst announces last rounds for local offices to help residents file personal tax schedules. Deadlines loom with April 20 filing date and penalties for late or missing returns. Deputies visit Shelby, Lone Star, Fairview Hackney, Stromsburg with Polk remaining for additional visits March 30 to April 4 and final dates April 18 to 20. Residents urged to file even if exemptions apply and to list bonds, stocks, and notes accurately.
Osceola volunteers and Shelby department responded after a 4:30 a.m. alarm to a fire at the Alois Shemek farm eight miles north of Osceola. A large barn and bale storage were lost. heat lamp in sow section believed to start the blaze. Six sows were inside. neighbor Leonard Augustin raised the alarm and helped alert the farm.
Osceola voters will go to the polls Tuesday April 5 to elect a City Council in the South and North wards and two school board members. Council candidates Everette Smith and Ray Conrad were chosen by the Citizen's Party caucus on March 1 with no mayoral vacancy. School board nominees are W. R. Kepner Raymond Sedlak Oliver Schneider and Dale Nahrstedt, with Kepner and Lewis out. Balloting runs in the courthouse lobby and a sample ballot appears in this issue.
Osceola firemen invite former members to their regular meeting Thursday evening March 31 at 7 30 p m. Invitations were mailed but overlooked guests may consider this an invitation to join.
The University of Nebraska announces the first semester list of students in the upper ten percent of their class. Polk county names include sophomore Carolyn Rhodes of Osceola and Jacklyn Stanton of Stromsburg and freshman Norman Micek of Shelby.
A plaque for the Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital will be placed on Tuesday April 5 at 2:00 PM on the building site. The three foot square Carthage Marble stone will list officiant Dr. Jeffrey, hospital board officers, county commissioners, architects, and the general contractor. The event is public with county and hospital board members present and Verne Pangborn of the State Board of Health attending. the ceremony is expected to last about 30 minutes. Building work resumes with materials onsite and D L Moffitt as general contractor leading plumbing and electrical contractors on their portions.
Professor Donald Lentz of the University of Nebraska leads the University Symphonic Band in Osceola an evening concert. Duane Johnson Osceola music instructor and former pupil helped arrange one of five out of state appearances this year for the group.
The Polk County Agricultural Society announced a five town stock car circuit with Aurora Hastings Osceola York and Clay Center. Races begin May 29 at the fair grounds track with time and race count to be announced after the program is complete. The circuit enforces strict safety rules and fines for violations and the fair board may add a safety fence to protect spectators.
Superintendent Clair Walker announces Osceola Public Schools will observe Easter break from Good Friday April 8 through Monday April 11 with classes resuming Tuesday April 12.

Officials of the ASC say government price support wheat must pass Food and Drug Department inspection to be edible for humans. With delivery set for April 1, farmers should clean grain to remove dirt and rodent or bird droppings, as local elevator inspectors have final say and rejected grain goes to animal feed. Weevil contamination is less problematic but top-of-grain droppings are a major issue.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce met in regular session at the Legion Building on Monday night. Introductions included Glen Rowan new oil station manager, Charles Cejka new Produce Company owner, and D. L. Moffitt general contractor on Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital.
Construction starts this week on a new motel at the northeast corner of Osceola on Highway 7. The stakeout occurred Monday while footings were dug Tuesday by about a dozen workers. Builder William Gonka expects completion around June 1, weather permitting.
Osceola friends learned that Mrs. Fred L. Johnson died Sunday March 20 at her Kiowa Colorado home after two years of bed rest. Funeral and burial were held in Kiowa the following Wednesday. The Johnsons had long been Osceola residents before moving to Colorado.
The Stromsburg Evangelical Covenant Church will present the sacred cantata The Seven Last Words Of Christ by DuBois on Good Friday at 8:00 p.m. The choir is directed by Wilbur L Olson with organist Mrs Orion Hanson assisted by Janet Sundberg. Soloists include Irene Sundberg Ceci Johnson Calmar Youngquist Wilbur Falk and Pastor Cecil Johnson.
Polk county residents are asked to submit articles and pictures for deposit in a copper box to be sealed in the hospital cornerstone next Tuesday April 5. Small items may be left at the Record Office by Monday noon April 4. those with the most information about the hospital and Polk county will be chosen to be deposited behind the stone plaque.
Credit for substantial aid to Annie Jeffrey County Memorial Hospital goes to two firms. Dale Sayre of Bloomington Illinois won the finish hardware bid by savings and family ties to Osceola. The W S Desch Sons Co York offers a free $250 plaque for the cornerstone to be laid April 5 1955 with Dr Jeffrey placing the mortar. The piece notes local Ice Capades impressions and a correction about Ray Conrad’s omission from a Methodist building committee list.
