A district court jury returned a verdict of no action in a case filed by Dale Lewis against Arthur S. Nelson. The suit, brought nearly sixteen years after the 1920 auto accident on Osceola's South Main Street, followed a boy’s disfigurement from the incident.
Application intake begins at the Agricultural Agent Kelly’s office under the Farm Credit Administration. Loans capped at 200 dollars per farmer cover immediate cash needs for 1936 crops. Eligibility excludes those with other credit or outstanding Resettlement Administration loans. Security is a first lien on the financed crop with waivers by landlords. Checks issued from the Omaha Regional Office.
Next Sunday the pastor Rev Longacre will celebrate baptism for members uniting with the church. The Women’s Foreign Missionary Society met last Thursday. A quilting bee is planned Friday afternoon. Delegates to the County Sunday School convention at Waysland were elected. Local families host Sunday dinners and visitors, with farming activity and hospital trips mentioned.
The Harmony Society meets Thursday at 8 p.m. at Ruby Carlson’s home with Amy Gassier as program leader. Sunday includes Sunday School at 9 a.m. worship at 10 a.m. vesprs at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday at 8 p.m. Rev. C E Haterius presents The Land Of The Vikings with Swedish music and costumes by Mrs Haterius.
Kenneth Christensen and Robert and Roy Minnick, students at Doane College, spend spring break visiting home. Lincoln visitors include Mrs. A V Kielson and family, Miss Amy Rudeen, and Jack Christensen. Eden Baptist Church hosts a Bi shop Circle Society luncheon with music and a Rev R M Bailey program. A new Gamble Store will open in Stromsburg in the Hubbard building under Mr Wynn. Omaha visitors include Mr and Mrs Ivan Bengtson and Mr and Mrs Wesley Ericson and Mrs Harry Ericson.
Mrs A L Lewis recovered enough from surgery at Shelby hospital to leave for home. Dunning family learns of Lynn and neighbor boy auto accident in Minnesota with neighbor boy killed. Dunning party travels to Minnesota. Various relocations include Gable moving to Merrick farm northwest of Shelby and Corbett moving to Engelhardt farm north of Osceola. Yelkin relocates to Shelby. Moon visits Brock. Local business updates include Strain installing a large plate glass window and Fozzard selling Farmall tractors to area farmers. Merrick patient improving. Strange aids with farming. McGrew travels to Albin Wyoming. Gondringer and Densmore return from Casper Wyoming.
W D Kirtley of Nebraska City spent the weekend at the L A Snider home with Mrs Kirtley joining later. Leonard Fellows and George Koehler celebrated late birthday anniversaries with a card evening, while Harold Johnson family plans a move to the Mrs John Island house in south Osceola. Sew So Club met at Mrs Archie Holtzen with Mrs Roy Morgan and Mrs James Cook assisting. Ruth Milley Louella Crew Doris Hanson Gertie Carter and Helen Swanson vacationed in Lincoln Saturday.
A Polk county Young Republicans rally and banquet will be held in Stromsburg on Friday evening April 3. John Landis of Seward National Committeeman will speak. Temporary officers include Albert Hedblom Stromsburg chair, Mrs Grayce Stevens Hahn Stromsburg vice chair, Eugene Engelhardt Osceola secretary and treasurer.
The Stoner Club met on March 18 with 21 members and 4 visitors. It decided not to hold an open spring meeting and set membership fees at 25 cents. Neela Watts led an entertainment segment, one new member joined, and lunch was provided by the hostess with assistance. The April meeting will be hosted by Mamie Brown and Mae Scholz will lead a seed and plant exchange.
The Methodist Church lists choir practice Thursday at 7 30 pm an afternoon Ladies Aid on Friday with Mrs Calhoun and committee a Sunday School at 10 am worship at 11 am and Polk County Sunday School convention at Wayland Sunday afternoon and evening Elton Berck serves as president Rev B Johanson spoke to the young people Monday evening and a program committee meets Thursday. Mrs Edgar Wisely is superintendent of the Junior Department with about 35 to 40 children attending. Lay delegate election to Grand Island Annual Conference will be held after the morning service. Brother Mark Timm is judge of election.
Sunday decor at Mrs Will Garling home honored her birthday with family gathering and dinner. Mr and Mrs Will Hanquist celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary with guests from Hordville and nearby towns. Various visits, illnesses, and travel noted among Polk residents and friends.
Osceola golfers kicked off the season with an indoor Legion Hall meet. The treasurer reported strong finances with all bills paid and a healthy cash balance. Elected officers include President Clayton Rystrom and Secretary Treasurer W E Sindar. Directors named were John Rogers, Lloyd Cole, Tom Reece, and Eugene Engelhardt.
At a noon meeting in the Hotel Rapp the Community Club decided to turn the old band stand over to the Garden Club. The Masons donated the vacant lot for beautification. The old band platform will be torn down after years of disuse. There is little enthusiasm for a baseball season in Osceola with semi pro ideas debated. A state engineer will study a proposed highway route change along the railroad right of way for Highways 16 and 81 through Osceola.
The thirty eighth annual convention will be held Sunday March 29 at Wayland Church with afternoon and evening sessions. Readings prayers songs solos addresses and admonitions will be given by Rev Bailey Rolin Jones John Anderson Leon Merrick Miss Anna Oberg W E Thompson Russell Knight Rev J C White Rev E C Staley and Rev L M Albrecht with musical offerings by Polk Baptist Church male quartette and Harold Heaston.
The Luther League presents the motion pictures Land of the Vikings from Sweden at the Osceola Lutheran Church on Tuesday March 31 at 8 p m. Rev C E Haterius of St Joseph Michigan will appear. Tickets 25 cents for adults 15 cents for children over eight.
Green's Chapel hosts include the Ladies Aid meeting this Thursday with hostesses Mrs Axel Severine and Mrs Lambert Swanson. Victor Club gathers Friday March 27 with a 10 am reorganization and a covered dish lunch after. exhibit of lessons and newly formed club guests. County Farmers Union annual meeting at Green's Chapel Friday evening hosted by Liberty Local with speaker Mrs Henry Sinner.
St. Andrews residents host and visit kin across Columbus Shelby and Rising City. Guests include Rudolph Janicek Verona Lena Abis Anna Flaxel Cyrus Janicek Bert Shelby Emilee Nebosis Roy Grossnicklaus and local families. Holy Name Society met Eller's hall for a business hour and lunch. Joan Marie born to Art Johansen and wife.
Rev. B. Johanson superintendent of the Hastings district of the Methodist Church toured Monday night at the Mark Timm home and Tuesday at Rev. W. H. Wrights, meeting local congregants and conducting outreach.
Fairview and Cedar Bluffs residents share visits with relatives from Columbus McCook and Mt. Vernon. A wood sawing event at the hall drew a smaller crowd due to illness and farm work, yet produced a useful stockpile. Several local families attended weddings dances, and visits to York Ulysses Rising City and Stromsburg mark a busy social week for area residents.
Mrs Flora Seward of Osceola hosted the Fairview Ladies Aid at the hall while men cut wood for the church and hall. Silver Creek High School musicians gave a pleasing concert at the church last Sunday night. Valley Sunday School delegates Ted Rutter and Lewis Dunn will attend the County Sunday School convention at Wayland church next Sunday. Regular services are set for Fairview at 10 am and 11 am Sunday. Valley Church Sunday School at 10 am and preaching at 11 20 am. social evening at Valley church basement Friday April 3. Mrs Arthur Timm hosts Valley Aid at her home April 7. All welcome.
Mrs G G Shelmadine of Silver Creek visited Osceola with her parents Mr and Mrs P C Wieseman over Thursday. Mrs Hattie Fillman returned to Omaha after a week in Osceola with relatives. Miss Inez Johnson returned to Omaha after a week with sister Mrs Jack Malek. Mr and Mrs John Fillman of Lincoln spent Sunday with relatives. Mr and Mrs S Johnson visited the Sten Nordstedt home in Central City. Dr Ed Kotab of Nebraska City was a weekend guest at the W J Herbes home. Vote Green for Lieut Governor.
