Air Force offers ranks to qualified veterans at York substation

Floyd O. Asher, commanding officer at York Nebraska Recruiting Substation, announces qualified veterans from any service may join the Air Force with non-commissioned grades up to Technical Sergeant T-Set. Awards depend on skill and experience across about 300 specialties. The program welcomes former officers and veterans from all branches, highlighting higher income and aviation R D work. Baptism and Reception at Osceola Methodist Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday services at the Osceola Methodist Church featured a baptismal service and reception of new members. Kenneth Wayne and Dennis Charles Bowe, and Arlette Whit h, were baptized by Rev. Randall. Others joined by confession of faith: Marjorie and Marcia Schneider, Arlette Knight, Phyllis From. Easter Lily honors four new members from the Senior Youth Fellowship.

Condition of accident victim improves at hospital

Rodney Mickey Jarmin nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Don Jarmin was struck by a car from Michigan a week ago and is reported doing satisfactorily at St Francis hospital He suffered two broken legs one a compound fracture and multiple head bruises The car was driven by a Michigan woman en route to Idaho and knocked him about 75 feet.

Camp Fire Girls Plan Easter Egg Hunt and Pins

The Camp Fire Girls held a regular meeting after school on Monday and arranged an Easter Egg Hunt. They also decided to order membership pins. Mr and Mrs Edgar Wisely and Darlene of Fremont visited Osceola relatives Saturday and Sunday.

Shelby tops Osceola in county tournament opener

The Shelby team defeated Osceola 17 to 18 in the opening game of the county grade basketball tournament. Osceola and Polk face off for the consolation. Stromsburg beat Polk 24 to 17 to reach the finals Wednesday. Polk County bonds sales show strong February activity with FE Series at 177262.50 and statewide Nebraskans buying 13.44 million in U S Savings Bonds for the month.

Polk County roads remain muddy after two months of heavy snow and rain. Farmers report saturation on hard surfaces and gravel, with many vehicles parked along roads as subsoil moisture remains high. Lowlands flood and lakes linger while mild temperatures bring plans for spring field work.

AAA Sign-up Time Extended to April 15

The State AAA office in Lincoln extended the final date for signing 1948 AAA farm plans from April 1 to April 15 due to adverse weather. Farmers who signed but did not list soil conserving intentions should update them by April 15. 1947 Commodity Credit Corporation wheat loans are due April 30, with redemption possible at the bank holding the note or county AAA office.

Mrs. Harry Rodene and Bonnie helped Gary celebrate a birthday at the De Vera Rodene home. Families and friends from South Dakota visited and toured. The High Prairie Club will meet April 2 at Mrs. Arthur Ekstrom’s. Several residents attended dinners and visits in Columbus Grand Island Fremant and Fremont areas. A baby boy was born to Wallace Frederickson on March 17 at Grand Island. Vance Toline departed Thursday morning for Alabama.

Local High School Entered Livestock Judging Contest in Columbus

Ae Class of the local high school traveled Tuesday to Columbus for the Livestock Judging Contest. Over 500 entrants from Columbus, Fremont, Albion, Genoa and nearby towns competed for ribbons. Jerome Gabriel and Vernon Boden won red ribbons. Gerald Bryan and Lawrence Siemek received white ribbons.

Heart Attack Fatal to Floyd Stalnaker

Floyd J. Stalnaker of Dubois Wyoming died suddenly last week while doing carpentry work at Riverton Wyoming. Funeral services were held at Dubois. He is survived by his wife Elsie J Stalnaker of Dubois a son Dean T of Jackson and a granddaughter. He was born February 10 1889 in Elba Nebraska and moved to Wyoming in 1908. Osceola residents recall him from years ago.

The Methodist church hosts an Easter musicale by two junior choirs on Sunday afternoon. The concert begins at four o'clock and invites the public to attend.

Father-Son Banquet Draws Large Local Attendance

About two hundred fathers and sons attended the Father-Son banquet held in the school auditorium last Thursday night. WSCS ladies of the Methodist church served the meal quickly and smoothly. Rev. Randall gave the invocation, followed by speakers Elton Berck LaVecrae Richards Logan Vanlloosen Jr and the Legion Octet. Vaughn Leaming of York College delivered the main address. The event, revived this year after a hiatus, was praised for its organization.

Frisbie Leonard Rasp eldest son of John and Lavina Rasp died March 18 1948 after six weeks illness at Shelby hospital He born February 2 1872 on the Gresham area farm married Alice Jones August 8 1900 and had seven children All were at the funeral held at the Presbyterian Church in Gresham Burial was in Blue Ridge cemetery Attending relatives from afar included Eleanor Rasp Seattle Bennie Shultz Norman Oklahoma Harvey Rasp Omaha and others tied to the family.

4 H Soil Conservation Club Forms in Polk County

The first 4 H Soil Conservation Club in Polk County organized March 22 with officers Brigham Adams Dee ter Bryan Ostrander Mangelsen Kling man Brigham as leader and Rex Brigham as assistant. The group plans a World Herald film "Regimented Raindrops" and field tours on soil types and layers. A 4 H club banquet is set for April 1 with bankers from four towns attending.
