Osceola Community Club discussed placing a levy of six tenths of a mill on the spring ballot to fund a band and other musical ventures. The vote favored public funding over private costs, while supporting a winter lecture course idea. About forty members attended the noon luncheon.
The Weasley Chapel Woman's Club met at Mrs Goldie Schmoker's home on Thursday March 15 with 15 members and ten visitors. Mrs Leona Dawes presided at 2 30 pm as officers and committee chairs gave annual reports. New officers elected include President Margaret Richards Vice President Olive Hayhurst Secretary Goldie Schmoker Treasurer Myrtle Dean. A lunch followed and the club planned to meet April 5 at Mrs Maud Herrmann.
Osceola residents may observe pruning methods for fruit trees grape vines and small fruits as county agent F B Kelly demonstrates plants at the P W Horst home and nearby residences starting 1 30 PM Friday March 23 Kelly has led nine pruning demos in Polk county this spring with about ten attendees and notes weather and sales reduced turnout yet interest remains high.
Hackberry community reports Mrs C E Hoffer visit Wednesday afternoon. Don Hoffer ill with a hand infection. Spaulding and Opal visited Stromsburg Tuesday. Horace Lee family in York Saturday. Last week Church Night Supper well attended and enjoyed. Flu kept several students away: Walter Hartman Nellie Spaulding Celia Mae Spaulding Pauline Lee Ruth Lee Margaret Bond Maxine Davidson. Frank Kuhnel family dined with George Hassleback near Shelby Sunday. C J Stephenson home guests included C E B Hoffer R J Stephenson Walter Rystrom families. Up Streamer Class to meet in Church Basement Friday. Mildred Bond teaching at Independent this week Ruth Bond at Centennial for practice teaching. Ralph Davidson family visited Arbogast home Sunday. Moles Gertrude Oldberg guests at Ruth Bond’s Osceola home Tuesday night. Lawrence Heaston and Goldie Spaulding families attended a Shelby area wedding reception Friday. A J Kiehn family sick last week but now improved.
The Woman's Foreign Missionary Society and Kensington Young Woman's Missionary group host Founders Day events with hostesses Handel Collier F K E Merrick and Don Byers. Holy Week begins April 1 with daily 8 pm services. baptisms and Lord's Supper on Good Friday. Easter Sunday brings new members and regular services at 11 am and 7 30 pm. Manhattan Oil Co offers a free galvanized spout can with five gallons purchased.
The fifty third anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Richards was marked at their Osceola area home on March 17 1928. Relatives from near and far attended including eight children five of whom joined them with twenty four grandchildren and one great grandchild. The couple shared memories including a gift of 200 dollars from Mr Richards to his wife and children, and he distributed dollar bills to grandchildren and guests. The event featured heirloom attire and keepsakes, a lunch at 4 PM, and a cake with fifty three candles brought by granddaughter Glenda Larson.
Georgia Frye born September 12 1872 in Narvoo Illinois died March 18 1928 in Lincoln Nebraska at 55 years 5 months and 24 days. She married Harry S Osborne and had children Earle and Fayetta Osborne. Survived by mother Emma Van Hoosen two sisters four brothers son Earle Osborne and daughter Fayetta Osborne Reynolds. Funeral held in Osceola Methodist Church with Rev Handel Collier. burial in Osceola Cemetery.

Mr B S Calhoon dies at 74 at home after illness. Mrs Gust A Peterson dies suddenly in York County leaving husband and eight children. Community events include a commercial club dinner, fire protection talk, a local wedding for Vera Nelson to Arthur Altquist, and D A R delegates attending in York.
James Millican Inness of Osceola died Tuesday March 20 at his home, age 69 years 9 months 22 days. Born May 28 1858 in Wooler England he came to America in 1880. He married Alexa Smith in 1887 and leaves wife son R J Inness and granddaughter Marjory Inness. He is survived by two brothers and four sisters. The funeral was held today at the M E Church with Rev Handel Collier officiating.
Co. Alfred L. Moody of the 150th Field Artillery U S Army delivers a stirring patriotic talk on constitutional government and law enforcement at the Methodist Church in Osceola. The event, under Flying Squadron Foundation aegis, is free and open to the public. Moody, a longtime educator and school superintendent, is also known as a lecturer and soldier. The talk occurs Monday April 2 at 8 PM.
HaPpy Hour Society assembled at Mrs. Leroy Rhodes home on March 15 with several visitors. Mrs. Clyde Cannon presented two programs including a paper tearing contest won by Mrs. Elmer Tooker and consolation for Mrs. Rhodes of Geneva. In a shamrock hunt, Mrs. Walter Koehler won first with Mrs. Will Dake taking the consolation. Lunch was served by the hostess and two helpers. Next meeting set for April 19 at Mrs. Christy Weiseman’s home.
Shelby D C Cole of Lincoln visited Shelby during the fore part of the week. Miss Gladys McMeekin is ill with pneumonia at her grandmother's home. The county declamatory contest was held at Shelby Monday night with two firsts and one second place.
Friday and family were entertained at the George Buchta home Sunday. A number from this vicinity attended the Junior play at High Prairie Friday evening. Melvin Wilcox, freshman at Silver Creek, narrowly escaped serious injury when struck by a discus causing a scalp cut requiring three stitches. he returned to school Thursday.
Residents of Polk county and surrounding area are invited to a district dairy meeting in Osceola on Thursday March 22 at 1 30 P M. Speakers include H S Smith of the American Jersey Cattle Club and representatives from State Agricultural College Nebraska Dairy Development Society and Union Pacific railroad. Discussion will cover dairy call club and herd improvement work. The event follows the Seed Exchange meeting at the Hotchkiss building on the south side of the courthouse square.
Osceola voters at a Citizens caucus last Thursday nominated S A Snider for a fourth term as mayor. Ted Mills led the session with about 100 attendees at the courthouse community room. Other Citizens ticket nominees included J A Johnston for North Ward council, W E Piersor for South Ward, LeRoy Smith as city clerk, and P W Horat as city treasurer. Snider highlighted rapid reduction of bonded debt from 174 291.17 on March 15 1922 to 104 etc, noting retired lateral sewer bonds and a $10 316 50 treasury balance. In the same evening a school board caucus named Aug P Anderson, Sam Crouse, Wm Heitzman and Claus Anderson. spring election will choose two board members.
Polk County's older residents plan tree plantings as a patriotic duty for future locals. County agent meetings arrange forest tree seedlings from the Clarke McNary Act with orders at Osceola until supplies run out. 1928 is predicted to surpass prior years in 4 H club youth participation and project completions at the Nebraska agricultural college.
Maple Leaf Club held March 15 with 15 members and 16 visitors. They voted to send 5 to the Charles Robbin Home fund in Omaha. Two membership applications were read. Mrs Wisely led a demonstration enjoyed by all. Lunch featured lemon jello salad. Next meeting set with Mrs Dora McCormick April 5 in Osceola.
