Polk County Spelling Contest Set for Osceola High Saturday

The Polk County spelling contest will be held at Osceola High School on Saturday March 20 at 1:00 PM for grades 3 through 8. Winners in each grade receive ribbons and honorable mentions. top finishers advance to county and state level contests with final round requiring oral and written spelling.

Pre-nuptial Shower For Miss Arlea Deay At Sisters Home

A miscellaneous shower was hosted by Miss Arlea Deay’s sisters Neola and Josephine at their home on Saturday afternoon. About fifty guests attended. Miss Deay received many gifts while Little Miss Jeanice Schott dressed as a bride and Margie Jean Gabel as a groom with a wagon and a shower parasol. Jeanice sang The Wedding of Jack and Jill. Polk voters approve school bonds in special election

In Polk County school district No. 72 voters approved a 145 to 1 bond issuance to add to and alter the current building. If a federal grant covers 45 percent of costs and is approved, construction could start around June 1. The loan has been favorably received in Washington, with 60 percent of votes needed to pass. Local reactions praised community spirit and added school capacity.

Narrow escape for Iowa men near Osceola depot

E. W Boettcher and G. G. Walters of Rockwell Iowa narrowly avoided disaster when their car collided with an east bound freight near Osceola. The driver swerved to the left as the train arrived, the car overturned but was caught by the engine and dragged along the depot platform. Both men survived with only minor injuries and the car suffered light damage.

Charles McCloud Suffers Stroke at Home

Former Republican national committeeman Charles A. McCloud and president of the First National Bank of York suffered a slight paralytic stroke Tuesday afternoon at his home as he prepared to return to the bank. Doctors said his speech was impaired but not believed to be serious, though exact condition could not be determined immediately.

Conservation payments drive distributed statewide funds

W H Smith, treasurer of the County Agricultural Conservation Association, supervised payments totaling over 34000 to conservation applicants in Osceola, Canada, Clear Creek, Island and Hackberry precincts. Remaining precincts are expected to receive payments by week’s end per the farm bureau office.
