Agricultural Agent Kelly warns of high smut danger to small grains this summer as seed grain imports rise. Amos Gramlich of Sarpy County leads a state wide smut-treating campaign with demonstrations planned. formaldehyde remains common for oats while ceresan mercury compound favors barley and oats diseases.

Osceola prepares to ship the United States first carload of Jerusalem artichokes. Five acres planted by Fred G. Johnson, A F Nuquist, and the late S A Snider yielded over 600 bushels. Seed value is $3 a bushel. Johnson says demand exceeds supply. The crop aids livestock feed and human use, resisting bindweed. The car goes to Wyoming.
The Osceola Women's Club schedules its regular departmental meetings next Monday. The Literature Department gathers Monday afternoon with Mrs. James Inness, the Junior Literature Department meets Monday evening with Mrs. Charles Greenwood, and the Music Department will rehearse at the school house.
The St Richard Falley Chapter of the D A R met for a 1 pm luncheon at Mrs. Wm Grossnicklaus home. Mrs P B Campbell served as assistant host. Mrs W F Kepner spoke on D A R magazine content. Next meeting set for Mrs Homer Hartgon home.
Mr and Mrs C W Samuelson York announce a six pound son Robert Earl born March 11 at Osceola Hospital. Mrs Samuelson formerly Miss Eleanor Mills. A baby girl Lella Irene born March 11 to Mr and Mrs Earl Colby. Mrs Colby formerly Miss Irene Wagner. A baby boy born March 11 to Mr and Mrs Tom Ochmaker at Osceola Hospital. Herman Yelkin had appendectomy at Osceola Hospital performed by Dr Harley Eklund. Mrs Guildford Bryan of the valley confined at Osceola Hospital for medical treatment. Mrs W G Herrman returned home northeast Osceola convalescing from thyroid operation.
Social Center School notes show District 37 pupils and visitors sharing a birthday dinner at the Walter Koehler home on March 6 1936. Measles caused Maxine and Rex Dunn to miss school while Mr and Mrs Kermit Johnson visited Bert Dunn and Dick Johnson joined from Omaha with Mrs Whalen.

Shelby notes report the birth of Jeanette Leigh to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Daum on March 8. Frank Scholz marks his birthday with family visits while relatives and neighbors from Pilger Elgin Columbus and David City travel to Shelby for celebrations care and updates on health and hospital stays.
Oliver Thomas Craig born March 22 1908 Danville Kentucky died March 6 1935 aged 31 years 11 months 15 days. Survived by widow Ruth Blevins three sons Neal Thomson Byron Oliver Marvin Leon one sister and grandfather in Danville. Funeral at M K E Church Rising City with burial in Hoffer Cemetery.

Rollen Swanson spent Sunday with Nels Holm. District play The Clay's The Thing repeats Friday March 15 at Swede Home hall at 8. Come and enjoy.
Doris Anne Duncan of York was a weekend guest of Osceola friends, enjoying hospitality and local spots during her visit.

Ford Hovey presides over advance ticket sales with 60 000 discounted 40 cent tickets and rising price later. demand spans Iowa and Nebraska with extra allotments requested. Thousands from the midwest expected to attend the 16th annual event featuring rare plants and top horticulture displays.
York High School edged Geneva High School 29 to 28 in the district finals at York. Geneva led early but York surged ahead by halftime 17 to 14 and held on after a late rally by Geneva. York previously defeated Polk Seward and Hebron en route to the title with M Peterson of Polk earning a tournament honor roll spot.
Fairview residents LaVerne Dake and Leora Young visit Omaha relatives while Elder Dake returns home. Mrs. Guildford Bryan hospitalized in Osceola. Several families host and visit in Osceola and Stromsburg. Happy Hour Society met March 7 at Silas Barker home with officers elected. Mrs. W B Dake slowly improves in Omaha.

Uriah Ferris Pointer, born December 20 1870 near Dunreath Iowa, died March 6 1931 at his Shelby Nebraska home after two years of illness. Funeral held Friday at United Brethren Church Shelby with interment in Shelby Graceland Cemetery. He leaves a widow a daughter Hortense two sons and a granddaughter plus two sisters.
The Lincoln extension service schedules Arthur Peterson to discuss pasture problems at two Polk County meetings on Tuesday March 19. The Stromsburg morning session at 10 a.m. in the high school and the Shelby afternoon session at 2 p.m. in the Shelby gym are set to avoid sales interference and allow attendance at both. The statewide pasture improvement contest will be explained and enrollment blanks provided with cash prizes across three divisions noted by Agriculture Agent Kelly.
