Osceola Bulldogs draw St Cecelia in state tourney

Osceola High School meets Hastings St Cecelia in the Class C state basketball first round at Pershing Auditorium Lincoln on Thursday March 13 after earning a 49 46 regional win over Howells Eddie Wieseman led Osceola with 14 points and Jack Cerny hit key free throws in the final minute. Osceola officials announce school dismissal Thursday March 13 and Channel 5 Hastings will telecast the game.

Osceola to Welcome Plexi-Lite Plastic Firm

Tom Hofbauer plans to open a Plexi-Lite Productions plastics plant in Osceola at the Wobig Building on The Square Northeast. Principal products include three dimensional plastic signs. Also noted are voter registration deadlines and a busy week for Bulldog fans with a tournament game and early school dismissal.

Polk County spelling champs named at Osceola event

The Polk County spelling contest at Osceola Annie Jeffrey Elementary named eight winners from 5th to 8th grades. Top finishers include Janet Kampovitz and Tobin Anderson in morning 5th–6th, and Roger Hollister and Duane Oquist in afternoon 7th–8th. All eight advance to District 1 in Fairbury. Hollister also represents Polk at the Midwest Spelling Bee in Omaha.

Mrs Merklinger 73 Dies in Beatrice Hospital

Henry Merklinger 73 of Plymouth passed away at 7 p.m. Saturday at a Beatrice hospital after entering at 3 p.m. Services were held Wednesday afternoon at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Plymouth. Survived by husband, three sons Rev Donald Grummert of Minneapolis Ralph Merklinger of Sioux City George Merklinger of Holland and daughter Mrs Mervin Stromberg of Osceola plus 13 grandchildren.

Livestock Feeders Meeting Rescheduled for March 20

The Polk County Livestock Feeders Association organizational meeting is moved due to the State Basketball Tournament. It will be held Thursday March 20 at 7:00 p.m. with the program unchanged at the Polk County Recreational Club House west of Osceola.

Second caucus nominates Lillian McDonald to fill board vacancy

The second school caucus held Friday March 7 at City Hall nominated Lillian McDonald and Everette Smith for two open School Board of District 19 seats. A run-off vote 30 to 8 chose McDonald to replace Dr Don Evans who withdrew. Election bets show two women may join the board.

Firemen attend safety clinic on anhydrous ammonia handling

Osceola volunteers led by Everette Smith Cedric Fineey and Lee Schroeder attended a safety clinic in Columbus on handling anhydrous ammonia. Sponsored by Co op Oil and Co op Insurance writers the session stressed water as a key defense against fumes and skin exposure and urged protective gear and water flushing for responders and farmers. Nebraska lacks state safety rules for handling and transport of the chemical even as calls for legislation grow after the Crete disaster.

Paving Project Begins in Osceola in 1919

In Osceola the spring of 1919 saw the start of first hard surfaced streets. A photograph of Mrs. J. C. Cotton shows the mixing hopper at the U. P. Depot as paving work moved forward in March.

Additions to Old Times Day plans

The Old Times Day Committee adds events for May 31 including a rifle and pistol match at Polk County Recreation grounds with Osceola Rifle and Pistol Club and State Rifle and Pistol Association, an Art and Hobby Show by the American Legion Auxiliary, a Lions pancake supper, amusement rides, concessions, possible Bingo, an afternoon library open house, and window displays with patriotic themes.
