Common Barberry Kill Methods From USDA Circular
The common barberry, a host for black stem rust, is hard to remove by digging but can be killed with chemicals. Salt and kerosene are effective. salt requires surrounding all shoots with 5 to 10 pounds, kerosene needs 2 quarts to 1 gallon per bush base. Treatments work year round when ground isn’t frozen, with kerosene allowing livestock access after application. A circular with full details is available from USDA Washington DC.
