Prune grapevines before sap runs when canes are not frozen. For two wire trellises keep a strong cane on each side of the trunk near the top wire and cut to 8 12 buds. lower wire canes to 6 8 buds. Use short canes or one bud spurs if needed and cut an inch from the last bud. Renew weak parts by training new shoots and, when the trunk weakens, start a new shoot from the ground.
