The text recalls Schwatka’s two year absence and his discovery of a long lost party remains as a defining American achievement. It notes his 1885 army resignation to pursue exploration and his pioneering voyage along the Yukon River, which inspired popular travel writings of the era.
Osceola records note Walter Wellman born 1858, teen reporter in Sutton, Nebraska. He founded a Sutton paper at 14 and later led Arctic attempts and the first radio from an airship, with fame echoing from Ohio to Chicago and Paris. Despite world records, his name fades in Nebraska memory.
