Long Time Resident Susanna Richmond Dies in Osceola

Susanna Richmond a long time Osceola resident born in Lime Lake Canada December 22 1857 died at her home in Osceola Nebraska Sunday June 23 1935 at age 77 years six months and one day She came to Cedar Rapids as a child later married Alexander Whitehead October 22 1879 in Omaha They lived on a Polk County farm before moving to Osceola in 1915 She leaves daughter Hazel now Mrs N O Brown sister Mrs H F Nantkes and brothers William H Richmond and Richard James Richmond Funeral was held at the family home and she was buried in Osceola Cemetery.

Funeral held for Mrs. A A Gray in Osceola

Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church for Mrs. A A Gray with Rev W H Wright presiding. Interment followed in Osceola Cemetery. She died Thursday morning June 20 in Osceola at 71 years, six months and 15 days.

Stoner Club Meeting Highlights June 19 Attendance

The Stoner Club met on Wednesday June 19 with Mrs Walter Watts leading a program that featured Ortha Watts reading and two piano solos Carol Hansen sang two vocal solos and Charlotte Adams accompanied all club songs Twenty members attended along with two guest lades and several high school girls Plans to send two flood relief comforts to Nebraska were announced Ice cream cake and lemonade were served by the hostess and helpers The July meeting will be with Laura Hendrickson Anna Pierson to lead the program.

The City Council bans firing firecrackers squibs and rockets within city limits except on July 2 3 and 4 1935. The Chief of Police must apprehend violators and citizens are urged to report any violations. W E Pierson mayor.

Fairview Fire Threatens Home

A fire in Eleazer McCormick’s house Sunday evening was stopped by a quick bucket brigade before the Silver Creek Chemical truck arrived. The blaze started between plaster and weather boarding on the floor, but neighbors kept it under control. Nearby communities and families were mentioned in passing, with social visits and upcoming events noted.

Workmen completed improvements at the Osceola swimming pool as the season nears. Officials expect a July 4 opening, with J. Carl Bryant named caretaker for the year.

Shelby Woman Aged 21 Dies In Suspected Suicide

Sheriff Peterson and County Attorney Stanton investigated after Sperry of Gresham reportedly took poison. An autopsy labeled the death as death by own action though motive remains unclear. The woman was about 21 years old.

Sheriff Improves Liquor Law Case in Shelby

Sheriff Peterson and Deputy Scholz conducted a late night raid on Chas. Rogers in Shelby and brought him to Osceola with several cases of liquor. Rogers waived preliminary hearing and was bound over to district court on four counts under the new law with a $1000 bond. each count carries up to $500 or six months in jail. This marks Polk County’s first prosecution under the recent liquor legislation.

Oil truck clashes with car near Belleville

Lawrence Koehler of D W Adair drove an oil transport truck that collided with a car on Highway 81 south of Belleville Kansas. Mary Hodgins 24 and Betty June Hodgins 15 suffered critical injuries while Koehler and relief driver Adam Luft were uninjured. The truck cab was damaged and no gasoline was spilled. The car drove into the truck’s path. Koehler swerved and struck cement posts trying to avoid the collision.

Four-H Camps Schedule Set for Nebraska 4-H Members

4 H club members will camp again this year with trips planned to Crystal Lake Dakota County July 8 10 West Point July 11 13 Neleigh July 15 17 Seward July 18 20 and July 22 24 Curtis July 30 August. A statewide conservation camp will be held in Seward August 19 22 for outstanding conservation work. Forty four H clubbers and ten local leaders will receive prize trips to the conservation camp.

Miss Florence Alberta Johnson and Carleton V. Anderson married at the bride’s parents home in Stromsburg on June 20. Rev. V E Hedberg officiated with about 100 guests and Glenn Felix as matron of honor. The couple will reside in Stromsburg where he works as assistant postmaster.

Annual Crops Day At Nebraska College Of Agriculture

The annual Crops Day at the Nebraska College of Agriculture will be held on Tuesday July 2 with a morning speaking program and afternoon farm visits at the agronomy farm east of Lincoln. Polk county farmers are invited to attend for weed control, pasture improvement, Cheyenne wheat tests, and a hybrid corn program. Dr F D Keim will preside. An illustrated lecture on exploring the world for new crops is planned and six stops will show alfalfa, manure rotation, temporary pasture, winter wheat, oat, and barley varieties with planting dates.
