Members of the American Legion Auxiliary William Wolfe Post 91 hosted the OHS junior class for an afternoon tea in the legion club rooms on June 14. Paula Smith, 1977 Osceola Girls Stater, spoke about her week at Girls State and her election as county clerk.
The Osceola City Park Board reports difficulty keeping the pool open on schedule due to multiple problems. The pool manager and staff have tried their best with current facilities. Funding for a replacement pool will not be finalized until late 1977 and no design location or other details are decided. Board members Kuhnel Bartak and Jones welcome public questions and comments.
The Boy Scouts will pick up bundled newspapers this Saturday June 25. Place tied or bagged papers at the curb or porch by 9 a.m. to ensure collection.
The Indianapolis Clowns, baseball’s premier show team, will face the Shelby Town Team on June 23 for a game with diamond action and comedy. The Clowns tour coast to coast, winning about 80 percent, and feature former pros many who reached the majors, including Hank Aaron. The match starts at 8 15 p m.
The Polk County Girl Scout Day Camp starts Monday in the city park with troops from Osceola Shelby and Stromsburg setting up sites. Band chairman is Janet Sobieszyi of Shelby and the sessions run through Friday. Photos show junior and brownie troops with leaders Ruth Glassburner Elizabeth Brown Donna Savage Linda Rosenkranz and others in group portraits.
Lyndon Wieseman placed second in the javelin at Hastings AAU Junior Olympic meet with a 117 ft 11.75 in throw earning a national berth in Lincoln. Bernardine Nitsch also took second in the intermediate girls 880 yd with a 2:23.99 and both Osceola High juniors advance to Nebraska events.
Osceola girls 8 11s defeated Gresham 16 7 on June 15 with all players seeing action. Osceola Midgets beat Polk 3 2, while Midgets edged Rising City 9 6. Staplehurst beat Osceola 11 10 in 11 innings as Breather and Warnike homered. Columbus and Beatrice games scheduled. June 29 Osceola hosts Rising City and Waco trip next week.
Marsha Nyberg and Helena Mainieri arrived home June 13 after two years in Europe. They began in France, then Stockholm where they worked for the American Ambassador. They earned Montessori certificates in Perugia Italy from the Association Montessori International presented by Mario Montessori.
Polk County farmers must report planted acreages of wheat corn milo and barley to the ASCS by September 1 for corn and milo and before harvest if possible for wheat and barley. Reports on a field by field basis may affect 1978 set aside eligibility and random spot checks will verify accuracy. Mr and Mrs Ronald Boruch have moved into the former Ivan Flowers home on Ohio Street.
