Osceola native Stanley K. Hathaway was sworn in last weekend as Secretary of the Interior. The piece notes Hathaway’s local Koehler family ties and contrasts local pride with national events like the Honor America salute.
The Lincoln Center Farmers Market runs Saturdays from June 28 through September with stalls assigned to growers. Check in 7:00 to 9:30 a.m., sales 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.. stall fees 200 per Saturday or 15 for the season.
Firefighters were summoned to the David Althouse farm east of Osceola on Saturday afternoon to tackle a blaze that destroyed a quail breeding building and damaged animal skin equipment. Neighbors raised the alarm. ducks nearby were saved. A second alarm at the Good Samaritan Center Monday afternoon rang until firemen silenced it after an apparent accidental trigger. No loss estimate available.
The Shelby Legion Club hosts a regional art exhibit from Thursday 1:30 PM to Sunday with viewing hours 1:30 to 5:00 PM and Saturday evening. The event, themed American Heritage, features at least 25 artists and honors Terence R. Duren as Bicentennial artist of the year.
Osceola City Council meeting on June 5 approved purchasing a new police cruiser and half the cost of uniforms. The session considered a street improvement district, deed to David Winslow, flood insurance application, and building permit enforcement. permits issued to Marvin Dawes and Dave Winslow.
Osceola High School girls softball opened the season with a 11 6 loss to Polk on June 6 despite strong hitting led by Vicki Kucera who hit a homer and scored two. A June 13 win over Benedict 22 15 featured Amy Graham and Vicki with triples and Teresa Campbell four hits six runs. On June 16 Ulysses defeated Osceola 16 13 after early errors, with Vicki delivering a triple and two home runs and Sonia Senn Jamie Graham strong in the field. Brenda Peterson added a late homer to spark a rally.
The Polk County Mental Health Association held its annual meeting on June 5 at the Osceola clinic site. Dr. Steven Scott and Rob Roy reported 35 active Polk County Clinic cases, with 50 percent self referrals and growth in a pre sentence alcohol referral plan.
A sequence of local events is listed: baseball and historical society meetings, mental health programs, Girls State Tea with co chairs, museum hours, Lions meeting, extension club, and Rebekah Lodge gatherings across June 18 to June 25 in Osceola and nearby areas.
Eugenio Romaniello a 16 year old Brazilian student in the International Cultural Exchange stayed with the Duane Jones family in Osceola after five months with an Omaha host. He attends Millard High School in Omaha and plans to finish high school in six months in Brazil before pursuing engineering studies. He speaks fluent English and Portuguese and prefers a small town to a city setting. He enjoys Led Zeppelin, store bought bread, and American food and aims to return to Brazil to complete his college degree.
